A shark attack on an island in the Bahamas left a woman seriously injured on Monday, Sept. 14.
Police on the island of Bimini are investigating a reported shark attack that took place just off the coast of North Bimini, the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s Public Affairs & Communications Department (PACD) announced in a press release.
An initial report cited by the agency indicates that a 37-year-old Australian woman was participating in a dolphin excursion approximately three nautical miles off the coast of North Bimini when the incident occurred.

The woman, who has not been publicly identified, sustained “serious injuries” to her right ankle, per the PACD.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., she was transported to the Bimini Community Clinic and later airlifted to New Providence, where she is receiving further medical treatment.
The PACD said the investigation is ongoing.
The Bahamas are home to about 40 shark species, including great hammerheads, oceanic whitetip, and bull sharks, according to American Surf Magazine.
The most common species in the Bahamas are the Caribbean reef sharks, which can weigh around 155 pounds and reach around nine feet in length, per the outlet.
