  • Sara Bareilles shared she experienced her first miscarriage this year while navigating fertility challenges
  • The singer has been pursuing fertility treatments, including unsuccessful IVF attempts, and is now considering an egg donor
  • Bareilles reflected on the emotional toll of the process and finding love in different forms of parenthood

Sara Bareilles is opening up about experiencing a miscarriage earlier this year.

Speaking with The New York Times about her new album Good Grief, the singer, 46, shared her difficult fertility journey and revealed she experienced her first miscarriage this past year.

“It sucks,” Bareilles said of the experience. “Of course I wish I didn’t have a miscarriage.”

However, the musician said that after having a tough year — her good friend Gavin Creel died in 2024 and inspired part of her new album — it was a bit of a “relief” to not be pregnant. She shared that this era of her life “would be really, really, really hard” if she were expecting.

Earlier this month, Bareilles appeared on The Zach Sang Showand spoke about how she’s been pursuing fertility treatments. The singer, who is married to actor Joe Tippett, noted that she had no idea how hard the process would be when she began.

“I really wrestled because I found so little material out in the world of people talking about their fertility struggles,” she shared. “I found a lot of evidence of people talking about how hard it was to get pregnant once they had a healthy baby in their arms, but I didn’t find a lot of people talking, it’s not that there’s none, but I didn’t find a lot of people talking from the sort of like messy middle.”

Bareilles went on to say that she spent a lot of time in clinics during this process, getting her blood drawn and hormone levels checked.

“But the number of women I would encounter on any given day, just like little soldiers, just like coming in before they go to work, or not, or whatever, and just like doing the thing,” Bareilles said. “And doing, it’s like that line, I’m just swimming where they tell me to until I can’t swim no more. Like that, there is this total sense of surrender and powerlessness that you just have to make peace with because this is not something that is entirely in my control.”

“And no amount of money that I’m throwing at it, no amount of like it is just not entirely up to me how this looks. And that is so hard,” she added.

This past June, the singer shared that she and her husband have been trying to have children for the last two years.

In her documentary Good Grief, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival, Bareilles becomes emotional and revealed she’s tried IVF “a few times” and it’s been unsuccessful. The “Love Song” hitmaker then revealed that using an “egg donor” is the “next phase.”

“I really had to grieve that… that it won’t be mine,” Bareilles admitted in the documentary.

But it got her thinking about “the size of love” and that love is “big enough to hold a lot of shapes and sizes and ways things come.”
