The actor got his start in the ‘80s in cult classic films ‘The Outsiders’ and ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’

Rob Lowe is throwing it back to the 80s.
While promoting his latest film, The Musical, on the Sept. 23 episode of Chicks in the Office, Lowe reflected on how his career and personal life have progressed throughout the years.
Although the actor wed Sheryl Berkoff in 1991, the ‘80s were a time when he was single and finding his footing in his career and personal life.

“It was just an incredible time,” said Lowe. “It was an incredible time to be in the business. It was an incredible time to make movies. It was an incredible time to party. It was an incredible time to be single. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
“In the totality of humanity, if I could have lived in any time, that would have been it,” he said.

Host Maria “Ria” Ciuffo said the 80s were a time she would have liked to live in, to which Lowe said, “It’s better than you dream.”
“It was better than you dream,” he continued. “No social media. No cell phone cameras.”
Lowe recalled planning nights out with friends and not knowing if they were going to show up because they had no way to communicate.
“The intrigue of it was beautiful,” he said.

The movie star believes that fame is now a “burden” for young stars, and they’re not having “fun” compared to when he was getting his start in cult classic films The Outsiders and St. Elmo’s Fire.
Lowe, now a father to sons Matthew, 33, and John Owen, 30, grew up in Dayton, Ohio, before moving to California after his parents’ divorce.

“Up until I turned 26, I spent all my time investing in my career,” he told PEOPLE in 2022. “From 26 on, I’ve invested in me; my spirituality, my recovery, my marriage, my family. A lot of it has been, excuse me, f—ing hard. And no one has a perfect life… but I’m grateful for all of it.”
