At least two people were injured and 25 were evacuated when an Amtrak train caught on fire near Baltimore on Thursday, Sept. 24.
The Baltimore County Fire Department was (BCFD) called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. local time when a train car caught fire while passing through the area of Canberra Drive and Waterview Way in Essex, Md., fire officials wrote in a statement shared on social media.
Of the two people who sustained minor injuries, one refused medical treatment.
The train was carrying 189 passengers total, and was able to proceed to its next destination after the fire was put out, BCFD shared in a follow up post.
Amtrak issued a warning to passengers on social media amid the blaze.
“Travel Advisory: Local municipal officials have placed a hold on the tracks, which may affect train movements between Washington (WAS) and Philadelphia (PHL),” the statement from Amtrak read on X. “Your train may experience residual delays as a result. Our crews are working closely with all involved parties to restore normal service as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
