Prince Harry revealed the “sweet” way he and his family — including wife Meghan Markle, son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 5 — honor his late mother Princess Diana’s birthday: It’s with a special treat.
“Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake,” Harry, 41, said while answering questions at Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire on Saturday, which marked his final public appearance during his current trip to the UK.
“I think traditions are really, really important,” he added. “Especially when they’re sweet.”
The princess, who died at age 36 after being involved in a car crash in Paris in August 1997, would’ve been celebrated earlier this month, as her birthday falls on July 1.
In April, Harry cited his mother’s tragic death as a primary reason why he initially didn’t desire to be a working royal.
Harry, who was 12 at the time of Diana’s passing, claimed Diana’s job as a royal got her “killed,” and he didn’t want to suffer the same fate.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role — wherever this is headed, I don’t like it,’” the Duke of Sussex said
“I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years,” he shared.
However, the “Spare” author was inspired to change his mind about resigning from his royal duties — which he later did in 2020 — after he remembered that he could use his privilege to “make a difference in the world.”
“And also, what would my mum want me to do?” he added of Diana. “And that really changed my own perspective.”
In 2021, Harry reflected on the loss of his parent as a young boy, saying it left him with a “huge hole inside of me” in his written foreword to a children’s book for kids who lost a parent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He writes: “When I was a young boy I lost my mum. At the time I didn’t want to believe it or accept it, and it left a huge hole inside of me. I know how you feel, and I want to assure you that over time that hole will be filled with so much love and support. We all cope with loss in a different way, but when a parent goes to heaven, I was told their spirit, their love and the memories of them do not. They are always with you and you can hold onto them forever. I find this to be true.”
“You may feel alone, you may feel sad, you may feel angry, you may feel bad. This feeling will pass. And I will make a promise to you – you will feel better and stronger once you are ready to talk about how it makes you feel,” the prince closes.
