NEED TO KNOW

  • Olivia Wilde dedicated her new movie The Invite to Diane Keaton, who died at 79 in October 2025
  • Keaton and Wilde worked together on the 2015 movie Love the Coopers, in which Wilde portrayed Keaton’s character’s daughter
  • The Invite is in theaters June 26

Olivia Wilde made sure to honor Diane Keaton at the end of her new movie The Invite.

Wilde, 42, included a brief title card that reads, "For Diane," at the end of The Invite, which lands in theaters Friday, June 26.

The actress-turned-director dove into her relationship with Keaton, who died at 79 in October, when she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter at the movie's Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, June 24.

“I really wanted to show this movie to Diane. I don't think that there is an Invite without Diane Keaton because she's in so many of the films that inspired this film,” Wilde said. “She is the first actress I recognized to kind of represent a totally unique and complex woman; she didn't fit any archetype, she was singular in her vulnerability, her complexity, her creativity."

"She's unlike anyone else and she was very encouraging to me personally," she added. "And I just wanted this to be for her.”

Keaton and Wilde notably worked together on the 2015 comedy, Love the Coopers. The Christmas-themed movie saw Wilde portray Keaton's character's daughter among an ensemble cast that included John Goodman, Alan Arkin, Ed Helms, Alex Borstein, June Squibb, Jake Lacy, Marisa Tomei, Amanda Seyfried, Timothée Chalamet, Anthony Mackie and Molly Gordon, among others.

Wilde reminisced on getting to know Keaton in a sweet Instagram post she shared back in October after news of Keaton's death rocked the entertainment industry. "I couldn't believe I got to call her Mom," she said of filming Love the Coopers. "I took photos of the family bookshelves because it just felt so surreal and I wanted to remember this beautiful set that felt so real. We were a family, singing songs and freezing together in Pittsburgh. Diane was the heart of the family. Of course. She laughed through night shoots, kept us roaring with laughter constantly actually, and talked to us for hours about love."

"She told me to keep my heart open. She told me to direct. She told me to be brave," she added at the time. "She told me to keep laughing. She loved Rihanna (loved is an understatement) and played this song constantly. I hate that she's gone, but I love that she was here, and for a brief moment, I got to bask in her immaculate energy."

Wilde stars in The Invite, which she also directed, with Seth Rogen, Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz. In the comedy, Wilde and Rogen, 44, portray a married couple whose relationship is struggling; they host Norton and Cruz's characters — their upstairs neighbors — for an impromptu dinner party that reveals much about both couples' relationships.

The Invite is in theaters June 26.
