A 31-year-old woman and her baby were killed after they were struck by a wrong-way driver who officials in Indiana believe may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The tragedy occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 23. Just after 2:30 a.m. local time, authorities received a report of a head-on collision on Interstate 65 near mile marker 48 in Seymour, NBC affiliate WTHR, CBS affiliate WLKY and Fox affiliate WXIN reported.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2005 Jeep Liberty, driven by 51-year-old Theosco Middlebrooks, was heading north in the southbound lanes of the roadway when the vehicle hit a 2023 Ford Escape, driven by 31-year-old Alyssa Osborn.
Middlebrooks, who hailed from Louisville, Ky., and Osborn, of Scottsburg, Ind., were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to the reports.
The woman’s 1-year-old son, Waylon, was properly restrained in the backseat of the Ford Escape, but suffered critical injuries. The baby was transported to a children’s hospital in Louisville, where he later died, the outlets reported.
“Alcohol consumption by Middlebrooks likely played a role in the crash,” the Indiana State Police told WLKY. The toxicology results have yet to be finalized.
The investigation into the deadly crash is ongoing, and the Indiana State Police and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.

Following the collision, the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 were shut down for four hours, according to the reports.
