The ex-husband and in-laws of Hong Kong model and influencer Abby Choi has gone on trial more than three years after parts of her dismembered body were discovered in a refrigerator and a cooking pot.
Alex Kwong, his brother Anthony Kwong and their father, Kwong Kau, appeared in court on Monday, Sept. 21, according to the Associated Press.
The three men are charged with murder and preventing the lawful burial of a body in connection with Choi’s February 2023 death. They face life imprisonment if convicted of murder.
All three defendants wore masks and appeared calm in court, the AP reported. Kwong Kau wore a white T-shirt, while his sons wore suits.
Dozens of people waited outside the courtroom for the hearing to begin, and a live broadcast was arranged for people to watch outside. The jury trial is expected to last 45 days, with prosecutors expected to open their case at a later date.

Choi, a 28-year-old model, socialite and mother of four, was reported missing on Feb. 21, 2023, PEOPLE previously reported.
Three days later, authorities discovered some of her remains in a rental home in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district. Two legs believed to belong to Choi were found in a refrigerator, while a skull, ribs and hair were recovered from a cooking pot, according to previous PEOPLE reports.
Police also recovered a meat slicer, an electric saw and clothing from the residence, CNN reported. Officers subsequently searched a landfill for additional remains and evidence.
Authorities arrested Choi’s ex-husband, his brother and their father shortly after the discovery. Police said Choi had been involved in a financial dispute with her former husband and his family before her death, according to previous PEOPLE reports.
Alex Kwong was taken into custody at a ferry pier while allegedly attempting to flee Hong Kong by speedboat, PEOPLE previously reported.
Choi shared two children with Alex. She remarried after their divorce and had two younger children with her second husband, according to the AP.
Before her death, Choi frequently attended international fashion events and shared photos from fashion shows and shoots on Instagram. Days before her death, she posted about attending a Dior show at Paris Fashion Week, according to the AP.
She had also attended the Elie Saab Spring Summer 2023 Haute Couture show and appeared on the digital cover of L’Officiel Monaco, PEOPLE previously reported.
