Matt Damon has been candid about how challenging an experience filming The Odyssey was — but the dad of four says it was “all worth it” when he heard one of his daughter’s reviews.
Adapting an epic poem like The Odyssey into a movie is no easy task. The actor, 55, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that filming his newest epic was “more like an expedition than a movie” and that the cast and crew were “out in the weather, whether we were cold, uncomfortable, getting rained on.”
“This movie was by far the hardest movie to the most challenging movie I’ve ever been a part,” he says.
But Damon says that all those grueling days were well spent after he heard one of his daughters’ reviews after seeing the film. The star shares his four daughters — Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15 — with his wife Luciana.
“She saw The Odyssey, and at the end of it, she actually turned to me, and she said, ‘Dad, I’m proud of you,’ ” says Damon. “She’s never said anything like that because we joke around a lot, and so at that point, I was like, ‘I’m good.’”
“It was all worth it,” continues the proud dad.
Damon stars as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s newest film, which follows the story of Homer’s ancient Greek poem of the same name. The movie is out in theaters on Thursday, July 16.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the London premiere of The Odyssey earlier this month, Damon shared that it was “great” having all four of his daughters at the premiere since his family also sacrificed “a lot” for the film.
“It’s great because they had to sacrifice a lot too for this,” he told PEOPLE. “I went away for a while, they came and visited, but it was a lot. It was a very long movie, very grueling shoot, and I’m really excited for my girls to see it tonight.”

In June, Damon told PEOPLE that his career has offered him the opportunity to travel near and far — and his kids love to experience the world alongside him.
“We are seasoned travelers in our family, just because I work all over the world. So my kids love to travel,” said Damon.

The star opened up to PEOPLE in his cover story about experiencing a “new phase of life” as the empty-nest years approach.
“Having two older kids who are out of the nest and knowing how fast these final years go, we’re trying to be mindful of holding onto what we can,” he says.
