Malin Akerman is getting excited about her next major part!
Speaking with PEOPLE at the A Sense of Home NYC Gala on Sept. 23 in New York, the actress shared a glimpse into her role in the upcoming This Summer Will Be Different series, based on Carley Fortune‘s 2024 novel of the same name.
This Summer Will Be Different centers on Lucy, a tourist who is vacationing on Canada’s Prince Edward Island. It’s there that she meets Felix, a local who captures Lucy’s heart, year after year.
Felix, however, is the younger brother of Lucy’s best friend, Bridget. Things get complicated when Bridget suddenly leaves a week before her wedding, with Lucy torn between her and Felix.

Akerman will play Aunt Stacy in the 10-episode Netflix Canada series. No release date has yet been announced.
“I’m really excited. I’ve been having a blast,” the Hunting Wives star said. “I’ve only been on for a few days so far, but I have loved every moment.”

The series also stars Sophie Nélisse as Lucy, with Megan Follows to play Lucy’s mother, Cheryl Ashby. Nadine Bhabha and Matias Lucas are also part of the cast.
“It is one of my favorite characters too,” Akerman continued of her role. “She’s such an uplifting character in the whole series. It feels fun to come in and be that person to the rest of the cast. So thank you, Stacy. Thank you.”

Fortune shared her reaction to the news of Akerman and Follows’ casting on Instagram on Sept. 16. The author said it was a “BIG dream” of hers to have Follows join the cast, due to her connection to Anne of Green Gables.
“I grew up watching Megan as Anne Shirley in the pitch-perfect 1980s adaption of Anne of Green Gables, which has had a more profound impact on my writing than any other piece of culture,” Fortune said.

“It was such a delight to pay homage to Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel, those CBC films and to Megan’s iconic portrayal of Anne within the pages of This Summer Will Be Different,” she continued. “And it is an absolute THRILL that Megan has come on board for our @netflix series.”
Several of Fortune’s novels are in development. The TV adaptation of her 2022 novel, Every Summer After, premiered on Prime Video on June 10.
