Although the pair initially crossed paths in 2013, they didn’t begin dating until later after reconnecting on Instagram, Garner previously told The Hollywood Reporter. Recalling the exchange, the Ozark actress said she noticed Foster liking her posts before following him back, after which he sent her a direct message.
The couple became engaged during a trip to Montana in 2019, where Foster proposed by reading Garner a poem he had written for her, the actress previously told Vogue.
“He read me a poem he had written to me, and when he finished, he dropped to a knee and asked me to marry him,” Garner told the magazine.
Later that year, the pair exchanged vows in an intimate New York City courthouse ceremony. Garner told Vogue they ultimately chose City Hall over a larger wedding, saying the decision was inspired by her parents, who had married there four decades earlier.
The celebration also included a personal surprise from Foster, the Grammy-nominated frontman of Foster the People, who wrote and performed an original song titled “Lovers in a Stream” for the couple’s first dance.
“It was a surprise,” Garner told Vogue. “Mark wrote, produced, and sang it. It was very surreal, and the most beautiful present I’ve ever received. It felt like I was floating up in the air — it was the most magical moment I’ve ever had.”
Over the years, the couple frequently celebrated milestones together both publicly and privately.
In 2021, Foster marked their second wedding anniversary by sharing a wedding photo on Instagram alongside a poem that began, “Two years ago / our hearts became one.” He has since deleted all posts on his Instagram from before 2024.
The following year, Garner commemorated their third anniversary with her own Instagram tribute featuring a photo from their wedding day, though that post has since been deleted.

Foster was also by Garner’s side during several of her biggest career milestones. After winning her first Emmy for Ozark in 2019, Garner thanked Foster in her acceptance speech, calling him “the love of my life.”
When Garner won a Golden Globe in 2023 for her performance in Ozark, she once again thanked her husband from the stage.
“I want to say thank you to my team who has been with me for years, my husband, Mark, I love you,” she said.
