Influencer Lisa Mutalu Dies at Age 25 After Intense Vomiting Spell

Lisa Mutalu, a Zambian model and content creator, died on Aug. 20. She was 25.

The Zambian Police Service announced in a statement that the content creator — whose legal name was Lisa Mutambo — reportedly began vomiting and eventually lost consciousness after a night out with two friends in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia. She was brought to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mutalu maintained a following of over 122,000 on Instagram, where she was known for sharing lifestyle content and photos from her vacations.

Per the police statement, Mutalu was out with two friends at a hotel in Lusaka the evening before she died. At around 10:30 p.m., the statement continues, Mutalu and her friends relocated to another bar, where they “continued socializing.”

Between 2:30 and 3 a.m. the next morning, Mutalu’s boyfriend, Andrea Lisa, picked up the three women, dropping off the internet personalities’ friends and remaining with her that night, police continued. But as they arrived at Lisa’s residence in the suburb of Kalundu, “the deceased began vomiting and subsequently became unconscious,” police said.

Lisa contacted a friend, police claim, who helped him transport Mutalu to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police have opened an investigation into her death and have brought her body to a mortuary for a postmortem exam, though they said: “no physical injuries have been observed on the body.”

The Zambian Police Service has not commented further to PEOPLE.

Mutalu seemingly last updated her Instagram account on Aug. 19, sharing a joint post with Lisa that included a carousel of romantic images of the two of them at Chaminuka Lodge & Nature Reserve, a remote hotel outside of Lusaka.

Mutalu’s fans and followers flooded the comments with tributes to the late star.
