It cuts onions, potatoes, and more in just seconds
My Polish grandma, Stella, cooked everything from scratch without fancy tools (or a dishwasher, for that matter). I have memories of her peeling veggies, like potatoes for pierogies, with her small hand peeler, and I truly don’t know how she did it! It takes some serious elbow grease to peel and slice, which is why I’ve opted for a modern hack that makes the whole prep process way easier.
I rely on a mandoline slicer for perfect veggie cuts and chef-style blade work, and, coincidentally, I just spotted Gwyneth Paltrow using the same tool. In an Instagram post that continued her “Boyfriend Breakfast” series, the actress chopped fennel with a mandoline slicer. And you can get the exact tool I use at Amazon for just $15.

I must admit — when my fiancé ordered the Cambom Mandoline Slicer from Amazon, it didn’t seem like a top priority for our new kitchen. But from the moment I used it, I realized how wrong I was, as this super budget-friendly gadget saves so much time.
The blades are made with rust-resistant stainless steel that cuts through food with such precision that it barely requires any effort to use. It also comes with six blade types that slice, shred, wave, mash, and spiral to create a variety of dishes, from mashed potatoes to zucchini pasta. You can even adjust the shape and thickness of the spiralizer.
The blades are so easy to swap out, and the chopping function comes with a hand guard to protect your fingers.

Speaking of protection: The bottom is covered in a nonstick rubber that keeps the tool in place while you’re using it, for safety. The box that collects and stores your food is made of BPA-free plastic. When you’re not using the slicer, all of the blades fit inside the container for simple cabinet storage.
While my grandma may be disapproving of our modern slicer, I would hope that we redeem ourselves by cleaning all of our dishes by hand, including the mandoline food slicer, which, to our delight, came with a handled scrub brush to keep the blades fresh and far away from fingers. If you’re lucky enough to have a dishwasher, the whole set is also safe to put right inside.
Amazon shoppers are just as approving of the gadget. “I have used other kinds of mandolin[es] and this is by far the best,” one five-star reviewer wrote. “I seriously sliced an onion in six seconds.”
Another shopper loves that it’s not complex to use, noting that the “blades are easy to install and remove but don’t pop out when [in use].”
“It makes our life much easier in the kitchen,” a third noted. I completely agree.
Grandma Stella managed to cook incredible meals without gadgets like this, but I have a feeling even she might appreciate how much time it saves. If a mandoline slicer is good enough for Gwyneth Paltrow and her family, it’s definitely good enough for my weeknight cooking routine. Find more slicers at Amazon below.
