NEED TO KNOW

  • David Jaffe, the creator of God of War, posted a nearly seven-minute-long video to his YouTube channel on Feb. 28 discussing the first look image shared by Prime Video on social media
  • The hit video game franchise is being adapted into a TV show for the streamer and has a two-season order
  • Jaffe said the first look image was “so bad in so many ways”

The creator of the original God of War video game is criticizing the first look image from Amazon Prime Video's upcoming television adaptation of the franchise.

David Jaffe, who worked on the first and second God of War games from 2005 and 2007, posted a nearly seven-minute-long video to his YouTube channel on Feb. 28 discussing the photo that Prime Video shared on social media the day before. The image shows Ryan Hurst as Kratos, and Callum Vinson as his son, Atreus. Jaffe called the shot "so bad in so many ways."

“I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard, [but] it’s so dumb,” Jaffe, 54, said in the video. “But let’s be incredibly clear, okay? Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s so bad in so many ways, which we’ll talk about in a moment."

Jaffe then called showrunner Ronald D. Moore, whose credits include Outlander and Battlestar Galactica, "a juggernaut of a talented fellow," adding, "I have absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show.”

While noting that Hurst does not look exactly like the game version of Kratos, he was more critical of the stylistic choices at play in the first look image.

“Kratos in this pose with this expression, not the guy’s face, but this expression, he just looks stupid,” Jaffe said. “If you’re going to reveal, to most people, a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they’ve never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?”

He continued, “Maybe that’s conscious. Maybe they’re like, ‘Well, what we really want to focus on is the father-son story. And if we focus on him being like, Spartan rage, and all that, maybe people are like, 'I don’t want to watch that show.' Ok maybe. But then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s shi—-g in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like.”

Jaffe went on to criticize the styling of Vinson, saying that it looked like there was "tons of product" in Vinson's hair.

Jaffe is not involved with the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of the franchise. The series is mostly based on the two most recent God of War games, with which Jaffe was also not involved.

“Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye," an official logline reads, per Variety. "Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

A representative for Prime Video had no comment regarding Jaffe's statements.
