A restaurant at a country club in Florida has been a popular eating spot for decades — except customers wouldn’t be able to tell you the name.
That’s because the restaurant at Cross Creek Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. didn’t have a name until recently, according to local newspaper The News-Press.
“We would call it the lounge or the restaurant or the clubhouse. It’s always been that way,” Alan Jones, president of Cross Creek of Fort Myers Community Association, told the outlet. “Not much has changed here since 1987.”
Cross Creek Golf & Country Club marketing specialist Masha Beach decided to change that, and helped set up a contest where country club members could send in their suggestions for names.
“We had a lot of entries,” Beach told The News-Press. “People were pretty excited about it.”
She told the outlet that one entry from award-winning wildlife and nature photographer Carol Matthia. whose photos were displayed at the clubhouse, stood out. Beach said “she submitted a new logo with her art of a heron alongside a golf ball” along with the name: “Birdies at Cross Creek.”
“It’s so fitting,” Beach added of the name.

Along with the new name will come a few improvements as well. The restaurant, which features a main dining room with a stone fireplace and several chandeliers on the ceiling, will see a few changes to its interior and menu.
Jones told The News-Press that “eventually” the bar at the restaurant “will be renovated, and the bar will extend all the way around back.” He added, “That’s maybe a project for the next couple of years.”
There are also plans for new menu additions. The restaurant’s food and beverage manager Phyllis Muscatello told the outlet that they will be getting “an espresso machine in a few weeks for café con leche, espresso martinis,” and said “we’ll be grinding our own beans too.”
However, the restaurant will continue serving some of its fan-favorite dishes, including the Reuben, Cuban, grouper sandwich and Philly cheesesteak, per The News-Press.

Those are just some of the offerings on the menu, which also includes burgers, hot dogs, soups, salads, daily specials and homemade desserts at lunch. Dinner options include fish fry, roast chicken, duck, stuffed shrimp and surf-and-turf skewers.
“We’re excited the restaurant has a name and an identity,” Beach told the outlet.
