After taking a years-long break from music to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a professional swimmer, Cody Simpson has marked his musical return.
Now, the singer-songwriter is debuting the music video for "When It Comes to Loving You" with PEOPLE on Thursday, April 2.
In the Fight Club-inspired music video, Simpson, 29, arrives at a boxing gym and gets into a full-blown, bloody fight. About halfway through the video, Simpson wins the fight, lifts up his opponent and collects his money. In the end, Simpson picks up his things from the empty room and walks away.

"The dark and grittiness of the Fight Club-themed video added such an interesting layer of contrast to glitzy '80s pop nature of the song that I loved so much," Simpson tells PEOPLE exclusively over email.
He continues, "The juxtaposition of light and dark is what art is all about to me. I also felt like the fight was such a metaphor to the thought that 'there ain’t nothing I wouldn’t do when it comes to loving you' — I’d even beat a guy to a pulp."
Simpson released "When It Comes to Loving You" and "Baby Blue" on March 27.
"Now felt like the perfect time to return to music thanks to where pop music, and music in general, is right now. Pop is in the best place it’s been in years and I was really excited to come back and play in the scene again," he says of his musical return.
"All through my years as a professional swimmer I was so excited about eventual return, I felt like a bowstring pulled back. So when I was finally able to get back into the studio every day it just poured out of me," he continues. "It took about a year to figure out exactly what I wanted to achieve sonically but I feel like I got there with this sound! And am so excited to be finally starting to roll it out!"
Before his new single releases, Simpson's last full-length record was his self-titled album in 2022. Before that, he released 2011's Coast to Coast, 2012's Paradise, 2015's Free and 2019's B-Sides.

In 2025, Simpson took on the lead role of Sky Masterson in Australia's production of Guys & Dolls on Sydney Harbor. In November 2024, he told ABC News Breakfast it was a bucket list item.
"It was always my aim to do more of it once I retired from the pool and I was able to jump right back in," he said. "Fortunately I already knew most of the songs even coming into my audition which was awesome. I didn't have to learn the songs as much as I had to learn the scene, the script and start to embody the character of Sky."
Simpson added: "Acting is all about getting to live out your fantasies onstage, right? It's just going to be an unreal kind of vibe and energy to bring to Sydney."
The music video for "When It Comes to Loving You" is out now.
