A Canadian woman was ordered to pay the cost of her engagement ring after ending her engagement to her former fiancée.
According to a Civil Resolution Tribunal decision viewed by PEOPLE, Megan Klenman proposed to her former fiancée, Krystal Bullock, and gave her an engagement ring.
But when their relationship ended in August 2022, Klenman asked Bullock to return the ring. At the time, Bullock said she couldn't find it and claimed the ring was a gift. Klenman, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, repeatedly asked Bullock to find the ring, valued at $4,859.68, or reimburse her for it.

In text messages between the two, Bullock first claimed that she would give the ring back. Klenman then asked Bullock to send the ring via courier, but Bullock responded that she refused to send a $5,000 ring with a messenger service.
She even suggested Klenman could look through her belongings at her house to find the ring.
However, Bullock later claimed that she no longer had the ring after Klenman said they wouldn't be at peace with the end of the relationship until they received the ring.

The court ruled that it was more likely than not that Klenman had left the ring with Bullock. They stated that Bullock's excuses had switched too many times, and it wasn't logical that she asked Klenman to look through her belongings to find the ring and then later claimed not to know where it was.
Instead of ordering Bullock to return the ring, the court ordered her to pay Klenman $4,859.68, the original price of the ring on the receipt Klenman submitted. She also has to pay her former partner's tribunal fees of $175 and dispute-related expenses of $21.12.
