Body of Missing Woman, 26, Found 1 Day After Car Carrying 5 People Plunged into Chicago River

The body of a missing 26-year-old woman has been found over 24 hours after the car she was traveling in plunged into a river in Chicago.

The car crash occurred at around 2:31 a.m. local time on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 8, in the 13000 block of South Indiana Avenue, the Chicago Police Department confirmed in a statement obtained by PEOPLE.

“A Chevrolet Trailblazer, with five adult occupants, was traveling westbound at the above location when the driver lost control and went into the water,” police said, confirming that the driver had later been issued a citation for failure to reduce speed.

Police didn’t name the victims; however, local outlets identified them as Ralphelle Howard, 26, and Trumayne Sanders, 24.

Howard had been in the vehicle with four other people when the driver lost control and crashed through a barrier into the Little Calumet River, per CBS News Chicago.

Chicago police confirmed to PEOPLE that the body of a 26-year-old female had been pulled from the river in the area at approximately 10:48 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Police added that the female had been transported to Roseland Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. They confirmed that Area Detectives were investigating the case.

Howard’s father told CBS News Chicago that his daughter’s body had been found on the riverbank around half a block from where the car was discovered in the water.

The discovery came after Sanders was pulled from the car following the crash. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, per NBC 5 Chicago.

Three others, including the 24-year-old male driver, survived the incident, Chicago police told PEOPLE in a statement, without naming those involved.

Two women, ages 22 and 27, were not injured in the crash, while the driver “was transported to Roseland Hospital in good condition with pain to the arm and shoulder,” per the statement.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.
