At least 12 people have died and nine others have been injured in a mass shooting in South Africa.
On Tuesday, June 9, officers from the South African Police Service responded to the incident at Jumpers Informal Settlement in the Johannesburg suburb of Cleveland at around 11:10 p.m. local time, authorities said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 10.
An informal settlement is a residential area where housing units have been constructed without official rights to the land.
“Upon arrival, police found numerous victims who had sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services were immediately summoned to the scene to assist the injured,” the release read.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that 12 people died as a result of the attack,” police continued. “Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene, while one additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.”
Officials added that at least nine other people, who sustained gunshot wounds, were transported to different hospitals.

“It is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland,” police stated.

Police added that the suspects allegedly drove through both entrances of the informal settlement and began “opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.”
Authorities are still searching for the suspects, and police confirmed that no arrests have been made. The motive for the attack is also currently unclear.
