Jumanji: Open World is trading in the jungle for the real world.
The upcoming film is the third in the Jumanji franchise starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. The first film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, premiered in 2017, and the second, Jumanji: The Next Level, was released in 2019.
The rebooted franchise reimagines the 1995 film starring the late Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt and Kirsten Dunst. Rather than center on a Jumanji board game, the Johnson-led franchise transitions to a modern video game in which a group of teenagers play in-game avatars.

What is Jumanji: Open World about?

Jumanji: Open World follows the video game’s avatars breaking free from their fictional universe and into the real world, where they unleash jungle chaos.
The avatars enter reality in “demo mode,” as declared in the trailer, which causes them to malfunction. The third installment flips the script, as the previous films focused on the teenagers and their loved ones getting trapped inside the video game.
Who is in the Jumanji: Open World cast?

Along with Johnson, Black, Hart, and Gillan, returning cast members include Danny DeVito, Alex Wolff, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, Rhys Darby, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain and Madison Iseman. Newcomers Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes also joined the cast.
At CinemaCon in April 2026, Black shared his experience working on the third film. “I’ve never had more fun working on a movie. This is my favorite so far,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter.
His castmates agree. “All jokes aside, our Jumanji journey has been the greatest of a lifetime,” Johnson wrote on Instagram ahead of the trailer drop.
Is there a Jumanji: Open World trailer?
The first trailer for Jumanji: Open World dropped on July 28.
The trailer begins with Spencer Gilpin (Wolff) and his friends in shock as they see animals wreaking havoc in their world. At a restaurant, they encounter Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone (Johnson) and the other avatars who are meant to be in the Jumanji video game.
“We have a problem,” Gilpin says to his loved ones after a chat with Bravestone. “They’re video game characters, but they’re stuck in demo mode.” Then, Black’s Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon says, “I’m beginning to suspect we’re not in Jumanji.”
The film will follow the real-world characters as they attempt to put the players back into the video game.
Will Jumanji: Open World be the last Jumanji?

Jumanji: Open World will be the last film in the franchise.
“What a massive, fun, heartfelt adventure,” Johnson wrote on Instagram in November 2025 when production kicked off. “Feels emotionally appropriate for our beloved JUMANJI franchise to end on this beautiful grace note of our final film. Amazing to get the whole gang back together, and our jaws were hurting from laughing so hard.”
For the last film in the rebooted trilogy, Johnson wanted to take it back to the original film and pay tribute to Williams’ character. He decided to wear the movie’s prop dice around his neck during filming, which the professional wrestler revealed in a video posted on Instagram in November 2025.
“It was my idea to honor him in some way, and I didn’t know how to do it,” Johnson told PEOPLE one month later. “And our costume designer, L.J. [Laura Jean Shannon] … goes, ‘What if I got the original dice [from the first movie]?’ And that’s what happened.”
When will Jumanji: Open World premiere?
Jumanji: Open World will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2026 — two weeks later than its original release date of December 11, per Variety.
The film’s new release date will separate it from the releases of Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday on December 18.
