A 111-year-old New Jersey man — believed to be the oldest in the U.S. — shared his three secrets to living a long life.
Luis Cano of Linden was born on Dec. 9, 1914, and was recently ranked as the 112th oldest person in the world by LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks the world's oldest people, according to Fox 5.
The father of 10, who is originally from Colombia, offered simple and practical tips when asked about his advice for longevity.
"Don't drink a lot. Get good sleep and don't smoke,” he said while speaking to the outlet.
And when it comes to a life well lived?
“Behave well,” Cano said.
Cano served in the Colombian Army in his youth and later operated a fleet of buses. He married Alicia Angelo Cano in 1948, and the pair moved their family to Long Island, N.Y., in the 1990s.
Cano, who has 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, said that he considers building a life in the U.S. to be the biggest accomplishment of his life.
Cano's wife died in 2004, and he now lives with two of his children.
The former fishing and airplane enthusiast told the outlet that he now spends much of his time looking out the window of his home and reflecting on “life,” adding that watching planes in the air brings him joy.
While speaking to LongeviQuest in January, Cano's family said the centenarian has become a bit of a local celebrity, noting that cars often honk in celebration when they see a sign for his birthday on the lawn each year.
They added that the city's mayor, Mayor Derek Armstead, has visited their home numerous times to chat with Cano and recently brought him a proclamation honoring his life and achievements.
