A woman in Florida died on the way home from her birthday dinner after she was hit by a car while trying to help a dog on the side of the road.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that a 25-year-old Tampa woman was killed at around 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, March 13, after she got out of her car to help a dog she spotted along the side of the road, per NBC affiliate WFLA, Fox affiliate KSTU and the Tampa Bay Times.
The incident occurred along Dale Mabry Highway. Troopers told the outlets that as the woman walked up to the dog, a 69-year-old man driving a Toyota RAV4 hit both the woman and dog, killing them both. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the woman killed in the incident and the driver of the Toyota have not been made public. The FHP did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for further information.

A similar incident took place in Florida two weeks prior when a high school “super scholar” was one of four people killed in a two-car accident in Orange County, Fla. on Saturday, March 1 as he was on his way home from a Ramadan service.
NBC affiliate WESH-TV and CBS affiliate WKMG-TV reported at the time that Sammy Lahik, a senior at Windermere High School, was a passenger in a 2024 Toyota Camry along with two others when it collided with a 2024 BMW M2 along Central Florida Parkway shortly before 11:00 p.m. local time on March 1.
Both vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed when the drivers lost control, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report obtained by PEOPLE at the time. The BMW attempted to change lanes and clipped the Toyota, which then hit a light pole, ejecting Lahik. Meanwhile, the BMW crashed into several trees alongside the roadway.
Lahik and a 24-year-old passenger in the BMW, Imalay Camacho Castaño, were taken to a nearby hospital where they later died, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
21-year-old Moad Machti, who was sitting in the front seat of the Toyota, and the BMW’s driver, Raul Gomez, 26, were pronounced dead at the scene, the outlets reported. The 20-year-old driver of the Toyota — whose name has not been made public — was taken a hospital with serious injuries.
Lahik had recently celebrated his acceptance to Duke University, according to the Sentinel. He was also named an Orange County Public Schools “Super Scholar” for his achievements in education.
