It was supposed to be a casual brunch — a simple stop to celebrate a newly minted engagement. Instead, when Nyla Durdin stepped into a sun-drenched outdoor garden filled with familiar faces, she realized she had just walked into the surprise of a lifetime.
“The moment of my engagement truly altered my brain chemistry,” Durdin tells PEOPLE. “I have never been more surprised, more full of pure, true, giddy love — my heart burst.”
Just days earlier, her partner Ryan had proposed in the woods of Oregon while the couple was visiting her family, kneeling among a carefully arranged circle of flowers crafted by her florist aunt. The romantic setting set the tone for what Durdin believed would be a quiet return home.

But when her parents suggested heading out for brunch to celebrate, she had no idea she was being guided straight into an elaborate garden party at one of her favorite brunch spots in Venice Beach. “Ryan remembered I always joked that no one had ever thrown me a surprise party,” she says, adding that as a self-described “retired theater kid,” the moment felt perfectly tailored to her.
Hidden in plain sight were friends and relatives who had flown in from across the country, quietly staying nearby to keep the secret intact. Durdin recalls the overwhelming sensation of watching her different worlds collide in one joyful place.
“I have always been confident I have the most incredible village,” she shares. “But seeing them all in one room, eagerly waiting for us, was something I’ll never forget.”
Her TikTok capturing the emotional reveal quickly resonated with viewers, thanks in part to the deeply personal touches that filled the celebration. The text overlay described how loved ones printed photos from throughout her relationship, created custom matchboxes and even designed a cake inspired by her saved Pinterest boards.
Once the initial shock wore off, Durdin began noticing the details that made the day feel uniquely hers. She says the flower arrangements, handcrafted by her mom after an early-morning trip to the flower district, and the intricately designed cake meant the most emotionally.

“My mom is the most creative and talented person,” she explains. “She made every arrangement herself and hid them so I wouldn’t see them when I got home.”
The cake, meanwhile, reflected the thoughtfulness of her high school girlfriends, who worked together to bring her online inspiration to life. For Durdin, those gestures symbolized something far bigger than décor.
“It reaffirmed how important it is to give to your village,” she says. “In that moment, I felt everything I’ve ever given to them come back to me tenfold.”
As her engagement content spread across TikTok, Durdin found herself deeply moved by the reactions pouring in from strangers who felt inspired by her story. Many messages encouraged her to continue embracing her emotional, expressive personality — something she says Ryan loves most about her.
“People said, ‘Never dim your shine for anyone,’ and that really stuck with me,” she says. “He told me his favorite part of the engagement was my reaction.”
The viral attention also sparked reflection about the kind of love and community she hopes her story represents during a difficult moment in the wider world. Durdin says she wants her posts to offer a sense of joy and remind people to celebrate their relationships openly.
“Life is too short — wear your heart on your sleeve and love loudly,” she says. “At the end of the day, we’ll remember the connections we made.”
Looking ahead, she’s already imagining ways to preserve the magic of that whirlwind week, even jokingly asking Ryan to reenact the proposal every month. More seriously, she hopes to carry the feeling of that surprise celebration into the next chapter of their life together.
“I never want to forget how it felt to see all my worlds come together,” Durdin says. “It will always remind me that your people come first.”
