The woman who was struck by a car driven by two young children will spend the remainder of her life recovering from the incident, according to her loved ones.
Two brothers, ages 4 and 7, struck Kiara Bowling in a Toyota sedan while she was walking a dog on the sidewalk on 35th Avenue in Oakland on Thursday, Aug. 6, ABC7 Eyewitness News reported. Bowling’s family told the outlet that she suffered a brain bleed, facial fractures, and will require multiple surgeries.
A GoFundMe created to raise money toward Bowling’s medical expenses states that due to the injuries she sustained in the incident, she faces “a long and difficult road ahead.”
“Kiara is facing a lifelong recovery and will need continued care far beyond the immediate aftermath of the accident,” the fundraiser description states. “Donations will help with medical bills, ongoing medical support, transportation to appointments, physical therapy, and other surgeries Kiara may need along the way.”

The GoFundMe — which as of Sunday, Aug. 9 has reached over $55,000 of its $90,000 goal — was created “to help Kiara through the challenges that follow such a traumatic event,” the description states, “and to make sure support is there during this painful and uncertain time.”
“Every contribution, no matter the size, can help ease some of the burden and allow Kiara to focus on healing and recovery,” the description states. “Please consider supporting Kiara Bowling and keeping Kiara in your thoughts during these difficult times. Your kindness, prayers, and generosity will mean so much as Kiara faces the road ahead.”
An update shared on the GoFundMe on Saturday, Aug. 8, further states, “Dear family, No matter what yesterday looked like, GOD IS STILL GOOD. Thank you for your love, support and prayers.”
The update, which also included a photo of Bowling wearing a Miss California Regency International 2026 sash — she was recently selected as the pageant winner — was signed off, “Kiara and family ❤️.”

Bowling, who is in her early 30s, is a final-year student at California State University East Bay who had returned to Oakland after completing a summer program at Yale for her J.D., per ABC7 Eyewitness News. She is currently being treated at Highland Hospital.
The Thursday collision occurred several blocks from the home of the 4-year-old and 7-year-old at around 9:30 a.m. local time. The sedan the boys were driving sideswiped another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and lost control, striking Bowling near 35th Avenue and Mangels Avenue, the Oakland police previously told PEOPLE.

Bowling and the two children driving the vehicle were transported to the hospital, the police said, adding that the siblings’ parents are cooperating with the investigation.
The older brother broke both legs and the younger brother sustained a concussion, the boys’ uncle, Ali, told ABC7 Eyewitness News.
