NEED TO KNOW
- A Redditor brought their two large dogs with them while staying at a friend’s house
- When they arrived, one dog peed on the friend’s porch and the pets left hair “everywhere”
- The friend asked the pet owner to pay for a cleaning service, but they refused
Bringing your pets over to a friend’s house can be risky.
One Reddit user shared that, due to the death of a close family member, they recently had to “drop things rather quickly” and return to her hometown, calling it “a pretty spur-of-the-moment occurrence.”
They told their friend about the last-minute trip, and the pal offered to put them up for a few days. The friend said she was “more than happy to host,” and agreed to let the poster bring their two dogs.
The poster shared that their dogs, a lab and a German Shepherd, are not “badly trained by any standard,” but are “large breed dogs” and can be “a bit much for many non-dog owners.”

“I made the 5 hour drive down and my friend came out to greet me. When unpacking the car I let the dogs out and immediately they went off to toilet (since it was a long trip),” they wrote. “My lab went into the bushes to pee but the GSD began to pee in the middle of the front porch (don’t ask me why, but she much prefers peeing on hard surfaces) and my friend immediately freaked out.”
“I was a bit confused and apologized, but it’s outside, so I didn’t get why she was so freaked out,” they added.
Aside from that instance, the poster noted that the two dogs were “fine” and “non-eventful” for the rest of the stay.
“They let me know when they need out and I clean up the poo straight away. I keep them under good supervision,” they wrote.
However, the friend felt a bit differently.
“At the end of the trip, my friend sent me a text saying ‘Hey, as you’d know the house is quite messy because of the dogs, and I’m going to hire a cleaner. Would you mind paying me for that?’” they recalled. “I was a bit taken aback. The dogs had zero accidents inside. Didn’t break anything. I asked what she meant, and she explained that there was dog hair everywhere.”
While the poster admitted “they are shedding dogs,” they felt their friend should have just asked them to vacuum before leaving.

“If she’d asked me to vacuum up after them I would have. But she didn’t,” they wrote. “I also don’t think a deep clean would be necessary. A quick vacuum of the carpets, couch, bed, etc. would be more than enough to remove any trace.”
Since the friend offered to let the poster stay over and had known about the dogs ahead of time, the poster felt like they didn’t need to pay, turning to Reddit to ask if they were in the wrong for refusing.
However, the vast majority of commenters sided with the friend, arguing that the pet owner shouldn’t have even needed to be asked to clean up after their dogs.
“So let me get this straight, and I say this as an owner of one lab but have had two at the same time in the past. A friend allows you to stay with two large, shedding dogs last minute and you make no effort to vacuum or otherwise contribute to cleaning before you leave,” one person commented. “I’d be so embarrassed to leave without cleaning after staying that I’d have paid for the cleaner in a heartbeat. You appear incredibly entitled and disrespectful to your friend and a clear AH.”
Another wrote, “She’s not used to pet hair. You saved money by staying with her instead of a hotel and dog boarding. Paying for a cleaning will still have saved you money.”
