A woman has been accused of attempted murder with a poisoned muffin.

Kana Fujiki, 46, was arrested after allegedly sending a poisoned baked good to a man at a shopping center in Kyoto, Japan, on July 24, according to Japan Today.

Fujiki allegedly gave the muffin to a mutual friend so they could pass it on to the 30-year-old man. The muffin was later found to be laced with a toxic substance called acrylamide, per the news outlet. Fujiki was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Japan Today reported that the woman was working for a chemical company at the time. Police are investigating whether she obtained the substance from her workplace.

The man ate some of the muffin while driving home. However, he stopped after he noticed an unusual taste. Later, he experienced impaired consciousness and was transported to a hospital.

Police said he was in the hospital until early August and continues to receive outpatient treatment, per Japan Today.

Local news outlet the Tokyo Reporter stated that the man did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Police believe there may have been an ongoing conflict between the woman and the man.

Fujiki has denied the allegation, although she admitted that she did send a muffin to the victim. She told police she “had no intention of killing him,” per Japan Today.

The woman is a dispatch worker from Higashiomi City.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that acrylamide consumption can affect the nervous system. The substance can cause muscle weakness, numbness, sweating and unsteadiness.

It is also likely to be carcinogenic to humans.
