Christopher Reeve’s son Will embarked on an emotional journey to honor his father’s legacy.
The 32-year-old ABC correspondent traveled to the places his father, the iconic Superman actor, visited on his final expedition before the horseback-riding accident 30 years ago that left him paralyzed for the rest of his life. Will invites viewers to join him in the new ABC primetime special Will Reeve: Finding My Father, airing Feb. 26.
The adventure, on which first Christopher and then Will tracked the migration of the Pacific gray whale, took them both from Mexico to an island near Siberia.
“My father was my hero,” Will says in the trailer for the one-hour special, shared exclusively with PEOPLE. “To millions, he was Superman. I idolize and miss a different Christopher Reeve… dad.”

Will was only 2 years old when his father was paralyzed, and he was 12 when he lost him due to complications from his injury. Now, as an adult, Will is left with some unanswered questions about his father.
“I’ve inherited some of my dad’s sense of adventure and have carried it with me into my job every day at Good Morning America and across ABC News,” he says in the trailer. “I’ve gotten to travel the world telling stories, but this is the one story that needs an ending.”
Will says his dad “lived a life filled with epic adventure,” and he feels he “left something out there” for him to find. “For 30 years now, I’ve dreamed of taking a journey to the last places he visited before his accident,” Will says.
Though decades have passed, Will discovered remnants of the mark his father left in the spots where he stopped. “The men who hosted my dad in those places have since died, so I found their sons and asked them to be my guide,” he says.

He reflects on a special moment in the trailer, shown through live footage: “A guy just came and found me on the beach with a 30-year-old photo of him with my dad. How cool is that?”
Though Christopher died in 2004 at age 52, Will feels this journey has brought them closer. “I’ve waited 30 years to do this and share the experience with my father,” he says. “Turns out, dad did leave something for me out here.”
Will Reeve: Finding My Father airs on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 10:02 P.M. EST on ABC, and is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.
