Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas isn’t the only performer in his family — his wife, BC Jean Ballas, has her own career as a musician.
The two met at a mutual friend’s house during an artist’s gathering. “It was kind of like a fun party night where singers and musicians would get up and perform,” BC Jean told Riff Magazine in March 2022.
After the event, the two exchanged numbers and eventually started dating in 2012. The couple later announced their engagement in January 2016 and married that November. Ballas and BC Jean welcomed a son, Banksi Wylde Ballas, in November 2023.
In addition, the couple have also joined forces musically with their band Alexander Jean, a combination of their middle names.
In September 2026, BC Jean joined Ballas onstage during his first performance with partner Maura Higgins on DWTS season 35. She performed Alannah Hayes’ song “Black Velvet” during their performance.

She developed an interest in music at a young age

BC Jean comes from a musical family, telling Broadway Wiz that her grandparents previously worked with singers Perry Como and Fred Waring, and her father was a trumpet player.
In turn, BC Jean became intrigued with poetry at age 5, which eventually transitioned into songwriting as a teenager.
“When I was 13, I started writing actual songs, and that turned into me wanting to sing, and then I started taking voice lessons,” she said in December 2017. “I did piano lessons too when I was very young.”

In addition to being a talented musician, BC Jean is a skilled songwriter who penned “If I Were A Boy” for Beyoncé.
Speaking to Songwriting Magazine in November 2019, BC Jean explained that she wrote the song after going through a breakup and planned to record it herself. That was, until Beyoncé heard the demo and wanted to have it on her album.
“I wrote from such personal experiences, I never imagined that someone else would ever want to sing about my ex-boyfriend!” BC Jean told the publication. “So I was like, ‘Tell her, thank you,’ but they were like, ‘No, you don’t understand, she has to have this song!’ ”
She continued, “Then I got lots of calls from lots of people being very, very persuasive, and the next thing I know, Beyoncé is singing the song and I’m getting signed to Clive Davis’ label, J Records.”
She and Ballas began dating in 2012

In a March 2022 interview with Riff Magazine, Ballas and BC Jean opened up about their first encounter with each other.
They recalled Ballas walking into a mutual friend’s party and being impressed by BC Jean’s singing.
“He couldn’t see me; he could only hear me,” she said. “And I think he liked what he heard.”
“Right when I got there, the whole room was just watching this girl on stage, and she was killing it,” Ballas added. “Her voice gave me the feels of a Janis Joplin. I was just blown away.”
After exchanging numbers, the pair developed a fast connection, with BC Jean noting, “We realized we had great chemistry both on and off the stage.”
They eventually joined musical forces when they formed the band Alexander Jean in 2015.
Ballas and BC Jean released their most recent single, “I Don’t Dance,” in September 2025.
They got engaged in November 2015

Shortly after they started working together on Alexander Jean, their song “Roses and Violets” inspired Ballas’ proposal to BC Jean, he told Access Hollywood.
He lined the driveway of their Los Angeles home with roses and violets, and decorated the interior with pieces that reflected BC Jean’s interests, including posters of her favorite bands. Ballas also arranged for their family and friends to wait upstairs while the special moment happened.
“I’ve been on stages my whole life, and when she walked in the room I thought, ‘Whoa, here we go,’ ” he said of the anticipation.
Ballas added, “So we kind of just held each other for a minute, and then I did the [one-knee] drop, I popped the question, she said yes. Everything went to plan.”
After Ballas and BC Jean got engaged on Nov. 25, 2015, they shared the happy news a few months later on Jan. 22, 2016.
They married in November 2016

One year after their engagement, Ballas and BC Jean wed on Nov. 25, 2016.
It was a three-day celebration, which included a Thanksgiving feast and a rehearsal dinner. “It was great that so much of my family was able to come. It was like a reunion,” he told PEOPLE.
The couple chose a “timeless bohemian” theme for their special day. BC Jean wore a 1920s-inspired wedding dress, and she walked down the aisle to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Notably, fellow DWTS pro Derek Hough was Ballas’ best man. Ballas choreographed an Argentine tango for him and BC Jean to perform as their first dance.
She and Ballas welcomed a son in 2023

Ballas and BC Jean welcomed their son, Banksi, on Nov. 5, 2023. However, they waited to announce his arrival.
“Happy one month sweet boy. You are so loved,” the new mom wrote on Instagram alongside an image of the newborn holding her thumb.
The couple first shared the news of their pregnancy on Instagram in June 2023.
“Lately we’ve been…making new music, making birthday wishes, went to Disneyland, made more music stuff, turned off our phones and went to the beach, car rides with our best mate, Boba tea, made more music,” they shared in an Instagram Reel. “Also, we’ve been making … a tiny human.”
The singers previously revealed that they had experienced a pregnancy loss in 2022.
She calls Ballas her “muse”

Speaking to PEOPLE about their music together, BC Jean noted that she and Ballas are inspired by each other when creating new work.
“We’re each other’s muses,” she said in July 2017. “For some people, spending that much time together doesn’t work out well for them, but for Mark and I, we’re a balancing act. When one’s down, the other picks them up.”
