Ilhan Omar has been married to her husband, Tim Mynett, for over five years.
The Democratic representative was previously married to Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she shares three children. She filed for divorce in 2019, citing “irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship,” per TMZ. Five months later, she married Mynett after his political consulting firm worked on her congressional campaign.
A spokesman for Omar, one of the first Muslims elected to Congress, said that the couple was married “Islamically and legally.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mynett is a “longtime consultant to some of the most innovative political campaigns” and has “raised over $100 million” for various organizations and candidates.
He’s also a father and has one son from his previous marriage to Beth Mynett, per NBC News.

Omar’s husband has had a 15-year-long political career, per his LinkedIn. After graduating from the University of Albany in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he started working as a political consultant for a number of firms in Washington D.C.
His former company, E Street Group, where Mynett was a partner, worked on Omar’s 2019-2020 reelection campaign. The Washington Post reported that the firm provided digital advertising, fundraising consulting, digital communications and design services.
Their marriage announcement sparked criticism from conservative groups, and the National Legal and Policy Center later filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that campaign funds had been used for personal benefit.
Omar wrote on X in March 2020 that her romance with Mynett began “long after” their work together started, and that she sought legal advice to ensure there were no legal issues with their relationship.
“As a family, we are committed to the practice of joy, compassion and love in our politics,” the congresswoman added. “And we are giving ourselves the permission to be happy and hope others will as well.”
Mynett’s company continued to work for Omar’s campaign until November 2020, per Fox News, and the FEC complaint against Omar’s campaign was later dismissed. The political consultant left E Street Group in 2022 and has since served as president and co-founder of Rose Lake Capital.

Like Omar, Mynett is also a parent. He shared one son with his ex-wife, Beth. According to NBC News, the couple were married from 2012 to 2019. Beth filed for divorce in August 2019, writing in court documents that Mynett’s “devastating and shocking declaration of love” for Omar led to their split.
Mynett denied allegations of an affair at the time, claiming it was part of a smear campaign. Omar’s spokesman had no comment on the allegations when PEOPLE reached out after the two wed.

In addition to the work he did through his political firm, Mynett has supported Omar’s career throughout their marriage. He campaigned alongside her in 2020 and has stood by her side at events like the 2023 White House Correspondents Dinner and the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
When asked about the negative remarks Omar has repeatedly received from President Donald Trump — including his December 2025 comments referring to her and Somali immigrants as “garbage” — Mynett said the criticism was nothing new.
“It wasn’t our first rodeo,” he told The Guardian a week later, recalling Trump’s first term.
Mynett said his wife was so heavily targeted by the president that the U.S. government required the couple to have a six-person security detail after authorities uncovered a credible plot against her.
“It’s nothing new, but it’s upsetting to see that this is where the leader of our country wants to draw the national attention,” he said. “It is just shocking and very upsetting.”

In the couple’s interview with The Guardian, Mynett praised his wife for the way she has navigated intense scrutiny since taking office.
“The congresswoman’s always exhibiting grace under pressure,” he said. “For any human being in the universe to be targeted this way, I’ve never met one that could handle it better than my wife.”
Mynett continued, “A lot of times I think back to all of the trials and tribulations of her life – a child war refugee, there’s so much – but I don’t even think it’s that. I don’t think it’s her experience. I think it’s the core of who she is. She knows why she’s here and she’ll never be deterred by somebody doing racist, bigoted things towards her.”
