Jason Collins has had the support of his husband, Brunson Green, after his cancer diagnosis.
The former athlete, who was the first openly gay player in the NBA, announced that he had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in September 2025. Three months later, Collins shared an update himself, in which he revealed that he has a “very aggressive” form of stage 4 brain cancer.
“I have Stage 4 glioblastoma, one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer. It came on incredibly fast,” he told ESPN.
Collins made history in 2013 when he announced that he was gay in an open letter for Sports Illustrated. Shortly after he penned the letter, he met Green at a party. They began dating and tied the knot in May 2025.
Green is no stranger to the spotlight, as he has worked with several stars as a movie producer. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012 for his contributions to the hit film The Help and most recently produced Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You.
So, who is Jason Collins’ husband? Here’s everything to know about Brunson Green and his relationship with the former NBA athlete.

Green, who hails from Jackson, Miss., has worked as a movie producer for nearly three decades, per his IMDb. In the beginning of his career, he helped produce various films — including Chicken Party, Pretty Ugly People, Slappy the Clown, The Journeyman and Fool’s Gold.
In 2011, he partnered with longtime friends Tate Taylor and Kathryn Stockett — who also grew up in Jackson — to create a film adaptation of her 2009 book, The Help. He co-produced the movie with Taylor, who also directed the movie.
“When I first read it, I finished it on an airplane, bawling and smiling,” he told Collider of the book in 2011. “I had a sense of pride that Kathryn, this dear friend of mine, had written this amazing novel. And then, Octavia [Spencer] read it and went nuts over it, so it was like, ‘Okay, this is something that people really relate to and they get something out of it.’ ”
He added, “It’s a completely different genre than what Tate had done in the past, but I knew he could handle it because he grew up there. We all grew up there. It resonated with me because I’m from the South, but the material also really gets to your heart and your gut. It’s great.”
Green was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award and won a PGA Award and a Black Reel Award in 2012 for The Help.

In April 2013, Collins became the first openly gay athlete in the NBA. He shared the news by writing an open letter for Sports Illustrated.
“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” he wrote at the time. “I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation.”
Shortly after coming out, Collins met Green at a party, but he was in a different relationship at the time.
“We first met at a housewarming party last June, but I was dating someone else at the time,” Collins told The New York Times in June 2014. “Fast forward to September, I’m single again, and I see him at a party in L.A. So we exchange information because he was leaving for Europe the next day. But while he was gone, I was asking everyone: Have you heard of this guy? The background check.”
Collins explained that at the time of the interview, they had been dating about nine months, and it was going “well.”

After dating for more than a decade, Collins and Green married in May 2025.
“In May I married the love of my life, Brunson Green, at a ceremony in Austin, Texas, that couldn’t have been more perfect,” he told ESPN in December.
At the time of the wedding, several of Collins and Green’s guests shared photos of the newlyweds smiling and holding hands while celebrating their nuptials. Brunson’s former The Help colleagues Octavia Spencer and Allison Janney attended the ceremony.
Spencer posted a picture of the two walking down the aisle and captioned the photo, “Welcome to the family @jasoncollins_98. You’ve chosen well, and so has he! Love you, B!”

In September 2025, Collins’ family announced that he was receiving treatment for a brain tumor.
“NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor,” his family wrote in a statement shared with the NBA. “Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being.”
Three months after announcing his health status, Collins revealed that he was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma, “one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer,” as he told ESPN. As of December, Collins was getting experimental treatment in Singapore.
The former athlete related his diagnosis to his decision to come out in 2013 and said, “So if what I’m doing doesn’t save me, I feel good thinking that it might help someone else who gets a diagnosis like this one day.”
The former athlete credited Green for remaining by his side throughout treatment and researching different options. Amid his treatment, Collins spent a romantic vacation at the Sanchaya beach resort in Indonesia.
“Even when fighting brain cancer, you have to recharge and @thesanchaya is the perfect getaway to do that. Very relaxing birthday weekend for @brunsong & me,” he captioned photos of the two of them smiling and posing together.
