NEED TO KNOW

  • Best Medicine was renewed by Fox in March 2026
  • The second season of the medical comedy will premiere on Sept. 22
  • Season 2 will pick up after the first season left off on a few dramatic cliffhangers

A second season of Best Medicine is coming soon!

The hit Fox medical dramedy was renewed in March 2026, two months after the season 1 premiere.

Best Medicine, which is based on the popular British television series Doc Martin, stars Josh Charles as Dr. Martin Best, a high-profile Boston surgeon who uproots his life to take over a private practice in the small coastal town of Port Wenn, Maine. However, he has difficulty attending to the townsfolk because of his secret phobia of blood.

At the same time, Dr. Best struggles to fit into the tight-knit town, even though he vacationed there as a child. He works alongside community members — including teacher Louisa Gavin (Abigail Spencer), Sheriff Mark Mylow (Josh Segarra), his Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) and his assistant Elaine Denton (Cree) — to get to the bottom of some of the mysterious medical conditions plaguing his new neighbors.

Here’s everything to know about Best Medicine season 2.

While an official synopsis for Best Medicine season 2 has not been released, it will likely pick up from where season 1 ended.

In the first season’s finale, which aired on April 7, Dr. Best had to come to terms with his blood phobia head-on when his childhood nemesis Glendon Ross (Patch Darragh) threatened to expose him for letting his unlicensed assistant draw blood. Season 2 will likely follow Dr. Best defending himself in front of a medical board.

“He’s going to have to make some adjustments to his practice, and that might be a new antagonist in town that’s maybe having to watch over him, somebody who has to double-check his work now because they know that he wasn’t on the up and up,” showrunner Liz Tuccillo told TV Insider. “So now the main medical board might need to check up on him.”

Tuccillo added that assistant Elaine will also have to “evaluate her role in the office” to make herself “more helpful to Martin.”

In addition to following Dr. Best’s professional life, his personal life will also take center stage in season 2. He and Louisa initially hit it off, but just when things seems to be going well for them, he overhears her ex-fiancé Mark asking her to platonically co-parent a child with him.

“We’re going to pick up five months later, so you’ll see what she ended up deciding [then],” Tuccillo teased of the love triangle. “I think it’s just going to get more and more fun and more and more complicated.”

Best Medicine season 2 will likely feature returning stars Charles, Spencer, Segarra, Potts and Cree. When the series was renewed for a second season, Spencer expressed her excitement on Instagram.

“Breaking News! Breaking News! We are coming back for SEASON TWO! 🎉🎉🎉!” she captioned a screenshot of the announcement on March 2. “Thank you all for watching! Mutual delight! I j’adore this cast & these characters.”

In addition to the returning main cast members, two recurring stars have also been promoted to full-time cast members. Tuccillo confirmed that Stephen Spinella and Jason Veasey, who portray restaurant The Salty Breeze co-owners Greg Garrison and George Brady, respectively, will become series regulars.

“Nothing makes me happier than to make it official with Stephen Spinella and Jason Veasey as our beloved Greg and George. To work with two gentlemen who make every scene funnier, warmer, and more surprising, and happen to be wonderful people themselves, is all a showrunner can ever ask for,” Tuccillo said in a statement.
