What to Watch This Weekend (Jan. 17-18): 8 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream Now (Including a Matt Damon and Ben Affleck Reunion!)

Another cold weekend in January, another excuse to bundle up with your next movie and TV obsession.

This weekend, Jan. 17-18, a thrilling new action movie starring best pals Ben Affleck and Matt Damon hits Netflix, while the third installment of a beloved horror series comes to theaters nearly 20 years after the first sequel was released.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, an extraordinarily toxic romance show made its way back to Hulu with three steamy new episodes.

And there’s more! Here’s a list of the eight best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

It feels like it’s been 28 years (it’s been 21) since the first movie of the 28 Days franchise came out and, reader, the characters, including Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Ian Kelson, are feeling it.

The Rage Virus that infected the world nearly three decades ago in 2005’s 28 Days is still running rampant, while many have learned to survive in their own quarantined bubble. Some have even managed to live among the infected, but when one of them decides to venture out of their safe zone, he discovers a mutation that threatens to put everyone’s well-being at risk.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple releases in theaters on Jan. 16.

The Rip

If you came across $20 million that maybe wasn’t yours to keep, but no one would know if you skimmed a little off the top, would you do it? Good thing just about none of us will ever be in that position to know — unless you’re cops Lane (Damon) and JD (Affleck) in The Rip.

After their department chief is killed, the two get a tip for a $20 million “rip,” a.k.a. stacks of drug money. But the rip is fishy from the beginning: who called it in and why? The answer will leave you reeling.

Watch The Rip on Netflix.

Tell Me Lies season 3

Two seasons’ worth of drama just wasn’t enough for Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White), god forbid they simply have a peaceful semester at college like normal people.

But normal people they are not, and their relationship is as twisted as ever as they try to make it work (once again) while Lucy deals with a separate controversy of her own.

Watch the first three episodes of Tell Me Lies season 3 on Hulu.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms proves it doesn’t always have to be that deep for the Targaryen family — there can simply be a Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) who just wants to become a knight. We all need to have dreams to aspire to, don’t we?

Duncan feels the same as he sets out on his journey, acquiring a squire named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) and a romantic interest named Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) along the way in this show set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Watch the season premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.

The Hillside Strangler

When 10 women turned up slain and strangled in the hillsides of Los Angeles in a five-month span between October 1977 and February 1978, authorities knew they were looking for a serial killer — or in this case, two.

The Hillside Stranglers, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, were captured a year later when Bianchi confessed to a number of the murders while hypnotized and being questioned by police. He implicated his cousin, Buono, and agreed to testify in his trial to avoid the death penalty.

Watch The Hillside Stranglers on MGM+ and Prime Video.

Ponies

Don’t underestimate the wives of CIA operatives — especially if you’re going to kill their husbands! After their partners’ deaths, Bea (Emilia Clarke) and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson) take their roles as “ponies” (a.k.a persons of no interest in spy speak) to the next level.

The two widows team up to become CIA operatives themselves and go undercover as secretaries in 1977’s Cold War era — only to discover a conspiracy at play (and accidentally set a few bars and coats on fire).

Watch Ponies on Peacock.

Hijack season 2

Idris Elba’s Sam Nelson was responsible for saving hundreds on a hijacked plane in season 1 of Hijack, but now the tables have turned in the show’s return — in a major way.

In the first episode, it appears our Sammy has found himself in a highly improbable second hijacking situation, this time on a train in Berlin. But keep watching for the real, shocking truth. And that’s all we’ll say!

Watch the season 2 premiere of Hijack on Apple TV.

Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials

A story straight from the Queen of Crime herself, Seven Dials tells the story of a brave young lady, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent (Mia McKenna-Bruce), as she investigates the murder of her love interest over the course of three thrilling episodes.

Her clues? Seven ticking clocks, arranged in a very precise and particular order, leading her to a mysterious group known as the Seven Dials. But will time be on her side as she races against the nefarious evils at play?

Watch Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix.
