Angel Carter, the sister of the late Aaron Carter and Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter, is pulling the curtain back on their famous family.
On Thursday, March 20, Paramount+ unveiled the official trailer and premiere date for The Carters: Hurts to Love You, which gives viewers an inside look at the impact of Nick and Aaron’s success on their family. The two-part documentary will premiere on April 15, exclusively on Paramount+.
Per a release, the documentary “follows bona fide American teen heartthrobs Nick and Aaron, who seemed to have it all, but behind their remarkable gifts was a family dealing with mental health struggles, drug addiction and heartbreaking neglect.”
Meanwhile, Angel “unpacks the complicated family dynamics that led to the untimely deaths of three of the original five Carter kids as well as their father. She discusses the pain, fame, expectations, addiction, assumptions and at the heart of it all, critical mental health issues faced by the family, with the hope to honor their journey and transform their past into a message of hope and purpose for others encountering similar challenges.”

The documentary, which was directed by Soleil Moon Frye, will feature never-before-seen home videos, family photographs, audio records, private text messages and their most intimate moments.
The Carters: Hurts to Love You will feature intimate conversations between the only surviving siblings: Angel, 37, and Nick, 45, in addition to interviews with friends like Melissa Joan Hart, Scout Willis and the family’s longtime manager Lori Knight.
In the trailer for the documentary, fans get a glimpse at those home videos, beginning with Aaron as a young boy pretending he’s on the radio. As the trailer goes on, footage of Nick and Aaron growing up flashes across the screen as they explain how “fame and money destroyed our family.”

“Imagine being a child and walking like an adult, having your childhood taken away from you,” Angel said of Aaron, who was her fraternal twin.
“Five kids — and we’re all that’s left,” Nick added in the trailer, which also featured snippets from interviews with Hart and Willis.
Before the end of the trailer, Angel said, “I can be a voice for him. This is what happened behind the scenes. Here is the truth.”
Aaron died on Nov. 5, 2022, at age 34. Meanwhile, their sister Bobbie Jean “BJ” Carter died in December 2023 at the age of 41. The first Carter sibling to pass was Leslie Carter, who died in January 2012 at age 25.
In July 2024, Angel appeared on an episode of The Squeeze podcast and opened up about how Leslie’s death prepared her for Aaron’s.
“What’s so interesting about Leslie’s passing… she passed away when I was 23, her death completely blindsided me,” Angel shared. “I didn’t see that one coming. When she died, I was already in therapy, preparing for Aaron’s death. I thought he was gonna die.”
She also said that she “feared” his death her “entire twenties,” saying, “I knew this day was going to come.”
“I think he knew it, too,” she continued, attributing Aaron’s death to the fact that he “could not get out” of his years-long cycle of addiction, though he did seek treatment before he died.
