A student at the University of Utah died in an electric scooter accident during their first week on campus.
The student, who was not publicly identified but was from California, died in the accident on Aug. 28, local outlets KSL, ABC 4, and KMTI reported.
“University officials are providing support and assistance to the student’s family during this difficult time,” a spokesperson for the university said in a statement to KSL. “We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates and all those affected by this loss.”
The incident occurred on the university’s Salt Lake City campus, according to KMTI. The cause of the accident is unclear at this time.

The fatal accident occurred just two days before a second University of Utah student died by suicide at an off-campus apartment on Sunday, Aug. 30, Salt Lake City police told The Salt Lake City Tribune.
The university sent a campuswide email alert on Monday, Aug. 31, encouraging anyone who needs help to use the resources available on campus, the Tribune reported. These include the University Counseling Center, Manta Health ConnectNow, the Wellness Hub and the on-campus Mental Health First Responders Program.
