NEED TO KNOW

  • The Perfect Lie dropped on Netflix on Sept. 10
  • The Dutch drama series follows a tight group of friends whose dark secrets unravel after one of them dies in a house fire
  • It’s based on the 2004 novel The Dinner Club by Saskia Noort

At the end of The Perfect Lie, the flames aren’t fully extinguished.

The Dutch drama series, which hit on Netflix Sept. 10, centers on a woman, Karen (Loes Haverkort), who moves to Bergen in North Holland with her husband and daughter. There, the couple joins a local dinner club with fellow parents from their kid’s school. After one member dies in a house fire, the seemingly perfect group begins to unravel as their secrets and lies come out.

Based on the 2004 novel The Dinner Club by Saskia Noort, the seven-episode series ends by unveiling who set Babette (Noortje Herlaar) and Evert’s (Edwin Jonker) luxurious villa on fire. But the finale, titled “Ivo,” leaves one major question up to the imagination.

So, how does The Perfect Lie end? Here’s everything to know about the show’s final scenes.

The biggest question in The Perfect Lie is set up in the first episode, when Babette and Evert’s house goes up in flames.

Thankfully, the couple’s older son, Beau (Bryson Kroonen), makes it out of the fire. However, Evert dies in the fire, and Babette and their younger son, Luuk (Henk Courbois), are taken to the hospital, where they eventually recover. A toxicology report reveals the family had been drugged.

As the series jumps between the past and present, Evert starts to seem like the culprit. But the finale reveals Babette was behind the whole thing.

In the finale, Babette is also accused of pushing Hanneke (Rifka Lodeizen) off a balcony — an incident that puts her in a coma. Babette swears she didn’t do it, and she’s vindicated (to viewers, at least) when a mysterious person pays Hanneke a visit in the hospital.

Babette started the fire with homicidal intentions after she found out Evert was planning to leave her. To avoid the crumbling of their seemingly perfect family, she chose to end it all for everyone instead.

So, Babette mixed crushed sleeping pills into her children’s milk and her husband’s tea so that none of them would wake up once she set the fire. Her plan failed when Beau didn’t drink his milk, woke up to the smell of smoke and tried to save his dad’s life.

Before Beau left the burning house to ask the neighbors to call for help, he grabbed his dad’s phone. The phone contained secret recordings of Evert’s conversations with Babette, which he was told to start collecting by his lawyer.

Beau keeps the phone a secret from his mom. Eventually, Karen finds the phone and listens to the recordings, which help prove Babette’s guilt. Babette tries to take the phone from Karen, stabbing her with a knitting needle and then threatening her with a knife before the cops arrive just in time to arrest her.

Who pushed Hanneke?

The other major mystery in The Perfect Lie is who pushed Hanneke off a balcony, sending her into a coma.

Babette is a prime suspect — not only because of her violent history, but also because she was convinced that Hanneke and Evert were having an affair. During Babette’s interview with the police, however, she maintains her innocence even though, she says, no one will believe her.

The final scene backs up Babette’s claims. When Karen goes to visit Hanneke in the hospital, Hanneke’s hand starts to twitch. Karen then runs to find a doctor. While Hanneke is alone in the hospital room, a mysterious person wearing a black hoodie and holding a red heart-shaped balloon enters the room — and the finale ends there.

Since Babette was being interrogated by police during this moment, the ominous visitor isn’t her. But their identity remains unknown at the end of season 1, as does what occurs during that unexpected visit.

The Perfect Lie has not yet been renewed for a second season, which would likely reveal who, exactly, the perpetrator is.
