Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa are proving the holiday season is not always the most wonderful time of year — especially when you’re in the house flipping business.
In a PEOPLE exclusive first look at The Flipping El Moussas season 2 premiere, the married HGTV stars are seen celebrating their first Christmas with their son Tristan and extended family when Tarek gets a call about one of their most extreme flips yet.
“I got some news,” their colleague Jake can be heard saying over the phone. Tarek responds, “Good news, bad news? What kind of news?”
The clip is set at the couple’s Newport Beach, Calif. home where their family is seen gathering in the kitchen while all wearing matching holiday onesies.
As Tarek relocates to a quieter table in the corner, he asks his family to speak “just a little bit lower” so he can find out what’s going on with their Hawthorne, Calif. property.
“Well it’s definitely not good news,” Jake says on the phone as Heather joins her husband to listen in on the conversation.
Their colleague then explains that there’s an issue with the Hawthorne project, and reveals the “inspector saw that we had a couple changes that didn’t match up with the plans.”
“Yeah, but those are super minor changes,” Tarek responds, to which Jake agrees, “They’re super minor, man, but he noticed it and wants us to resubmit plans.”
When they find out it will “probably take six weeks,” Heather’s jaw drops and Tarek asks in disbelief, “Six weeks?”
The couple — who tied the knot in October 2021 and welcomed Tristan in January 2023 — were in the middle of celebrating their son’s first holiday season when they got the news.
Earlier in the clip, Heather opens up about some of their family’s holiday traditions and gets candid about marking the milestone as a family.
“We do matching Christmas jammies every year. It’s been an El Moussa family tradition for us, and this is Tristan’s first Christmas ever so it’s extra special now that we are a family of five,” says Heather, who is also stepmom to Tarek’s daughter Taylor, 14, and his son Brayden, 9, from his first marriage to HGTV star Christina Haack (formerly Hall).
She adds, “For me, capturing these memories and moments gives me a lifetime of joy.”
