Everyone knows that Severance is a twisted and psychologically thrilling series that flips the lens on the American workplace — even those who haven’t watched the show yet. But season 2 ended on a cliffhanger that fans can’t bear to grapple with. In episode 10 of season 2, titled “Cold Harbor,” viewers were given a more violent and dramatic experience inside Lumon, which director Ben Stiller acknowledged.
“I think there’s a lot of questions that are posed, and that’s also what I liked about the ending moment in how Elisabeth McGowan Dan [Erickson] wrote it,” Ben told The Hollywood Reporter in a March 2025 interview. “When we go to that freeze frame and we go to red — which we haven’t ever had that color, the blood being the first time — but to me, it’s sort of a shift of, okay, we’re going into another mode here. This is a lot darker and more dystopian than we’ve seen.”
So, what on earth happened at the end of season 2? Hollywood Life is breaking down the season finale here! (Warning: spoilers are ahead for Severance season 2)
How Many Episodes of Severance’s Season 2 Are There?
There are 10 episodes in season 2 of Severance. In season 1, there were nine episodes.
Severance Season 2 Ending Explained
There’s a lot to unpack from the season 2 finale. As previously mentioned, major spoilers are ahead for Severance‘s second season.
The season 2 finale ends with Mark S. (played by Adam Scott) killing Mr. Drummond (played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) with a gun while switching from his innie to his outie in the Lumon elevator. Outie Mark awakens in a ton of blood gushing from Drummond’s throat, while Innie Mark gets through a major fight with Drummond upstairs.
Mark must get to the Cold Harbor room, which, as viewers know, has been teased throughout the entire season. Fans have believed that Gemma (played by Dichen Lachman) will die once the Cold Harbor file is completed. Gemma does, indeed, reach the Cold Harbor room to complete a task, and Mark is able to intervene. Once she switches to her Outie, her and Mark’s emotional reunion is threatened by Dr. Mauer, who is gaining on them. Right before Mauer can stop them, the elevator closes, and Mark and Gemma are able to leave. When one of Gemma’s other Innie personalities, Ms. Casey, appears, Mark understands his task, and he helps free her of Lumon.
Mark, however, returns to Helly (played by Britt Lower) — or possibly Helena — leaving Gemma’s fate uncertain. It’s possible she doesn’t know that Mark is severed.
While discussing the season 2 finale with THR, Ben noted that the episode raises the “question of security at Lumon,” specifically referring to the bloody gun moment.
“How do they keep control over people?” Ben asked. “I guess somewhere in my head I thought, ‘Well, at some point…’ I never wanted it to be a show where everybody’s walking around with guns or anything like that. It’s not that kind of show. But there has to be some underbelly to this whole thing. So maybe down the line I thought we’d get here, but honestly I don’t think I knew it would go as far as we did.”
