Sarah Michelle Gellar has been a mom for 15 years now — but she just experienced a parenting first.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the 12th Annual Make-Up Artists & Hairstylists Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Feb. 15, the actress, 47, revealed that she had a nerve-wracking mom moment this week when she received a call from her 12-year-old son Rocky’s school.
“The first phone call from school,” she says, acknowledging the milestone. “[Rocky] needed to go to the ER.”
“[He] had an accident and needed stitches in his head, so really good times,” she continues, joking, “It’s been a fun week. Fires and stitches and floods, and I feel like the locusts are next. It’s going to be great.”
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum also shared how Rocky inquired about her plans before she left the house all glammed up for Saturday’s awards event — and she gave him a hilarious response. “He said, ‘Where are you going?’ I said, ‘Supermarket.’ ”

Gellar shares Rocky, as well as 15-year-old daughter Charlotte — with her husband of 22 years, Freddie Prinze Jr. Last year, the couple hit two other big parenting milestones when their son headed off for his first day of middle school and their daughter started high school.

At the time, the Cruel Intentions star shared a lighthearted video on Instagram showing herself dancing in her foyer while holding a pair of back-to-school signs printed with each of her kids’ names as she seemingly celebrated their return to the classroom after the summer.
She captioned the clip, which was soundtracked by Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry” hit: “Parents …. Who gets me today?!? But also…. How do I have a high schooler and a middle schooler?!? Time is a bitch.”
In January 2024, Gellar had another relatable parenting moment when she and Rocky attended a Los Angeles Chargers game together. When the pair suddenly appeared on the jumbotron, Rocky had an adorably enthusiastic reaction to his brief stint in the spotlight.
In a fan video shared on TikTok, he could be seen jumping up from his seat and then thrusting his hips forward and backward, prompting his mom to quickly pull him back down into his seat as she rolled her eyes and shook her head.

While Gellar keeps busy with her family life, she is also juggling some exciting projects in her career — among them, the long-awaited Buffy reboot. She recently signed on to the still-untitled sequel series as both a star and an executive producer.
At Saturday’s event, she admitted she was feeling a bit daunted by the project, knowing just how eagerly fans are anticipating it. “[It’s] nerve-wracking because you have to do it right,” she explained to PEOPLE.
“I wish there was a better word than overwhelming. It’s heartwarming and exciting and also incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time,” she said.
But Gellar was quick to note: “I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloé Zhao to the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], to Gail Berman. And I think people are going to be pretty impressed.”
