A pilot died in a plane crash at Provincetown Municipal Airport in Cape Cod, Mass., on Sunday, Jan. 4.
Around 3:15 p.m. local time, the plane caught fire, according to the Town of Provincetown’s Facebook post. The pilot was attempting to land the plane during the crash, the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) said, according to WCVB.
The pilot, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was the sole occupant of a private plane.
The Provincetown Fire Department and other “mutual aid partners” extinguished the fire; however, the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene, per Provincetown’s statement.
The airport has been closed following the crash, and remained closed on Monday, Jan. 5, Assistant Town Manager Dan Riviello said, according to the Cape Cod Times.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and MSP were notified about the fatal accident.
The NTSB is investigating the crash.
