Paul Mescal didn’t let not having a driver’s license stop him from landing his role in Normal People.
The 28-year-old actor admitted in an interview with W Magazine that he fibbed about his abilities behind the wheel in order to secure his role as Connell in the hit 2020 Hulu series.
“I said I could drive for Normal People, and I could not drive,” he revealed. “We’d signed the paperwork, I’d gotten the part, and then I’d forgotten about doing my driver’s license. So I ended up doing Normal People on a provisional license.”
He added: “I could only drive the car if there was a fully licensed driver beside me.”
After acknowledging that he does “all my own stunts,” he laughed, “I did the best driving—and we have this on record—that anybody’s ever done on-screen in Normal People.”
When asked if he is now a Formula 1 driver, he joked, “Yeah, I’m in Formula 1.”
Normal People — which is based on Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel — chronicles the complex romance between Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Mescal) as they navigate the ups and downs of high school and college.
Over the years, the costars have reunited, from casual hangouts to red carpet events including the Met Gala.
Most recently, Edgar-Jones, 26, and Mescal were spotted together at Glastonbury Festival in England in July. In one snapshot from the festival shared by the actress, Mescal wrapped his arm around Edgar-Jones’ shoulder as they posed together.
Edgar-Jones praised Mescal in an interview during an interview with Variety the following month, sharing, “Paul is one of my lifetime best friends.”
“He’s an incredibly grounded person and I am too, I think, so it’s nice to be able to have those touchstones and those people you can laugh about it with and be lighthearted with,” she added. “We met when I was 20 and Paul was 22; I’m so excited to see where we’ll be at 32, 42, and what life will bring us.”
