During their Olympic runs, Canadian ice dancers Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue had the internet desperately hoping they were a real-life couple.
While the retired pair are in happy relationships with other people, Moir said in a new interview that Virtue is still important to him — so much so that he spent much of his wedding day talking about her.
Moir, 38, told the Skate Ontario podcast Let’s Talk About It that Virtue, 36, was a major topic of discussion when he married his wife Jackie in 2022.
“I always say that my marriage is easy because of the lessons I learned with Tess,” he said. “I always say that I spent way too long on my wedding day talking about Tessa for anybody who didn’t understand Jackie and I’s relationship, because I kind of feel like everything Tessa and I went through, there’s no way I would have deserved a woman like Jackie if I hadn’t had those experiences.”
With three gold medals and two silvers under their belt, Moir and Virtue are the most decorated Olympic skaters of all time. They were among the most popular athletes at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics, with many fans shipping the pair as a couple.
They’ve been partners on the ice since Moir was 9 years old — though Jackie was actually his first ice dancing partner some three years earlier.
“I always tease my wife that yeah, Tess had a little bit more patience and deserved to skate with the man Scott instead of just a little boy,” he said on the podcast.
Moir also revealed that he and Virtue “have long conversations,” and still enjoys reflecting on their time together. They retired from skating together competitively in 2019.
“We see a lot of things on the news about bad sports stories, but we’re a success sports story, not because of the medals that are in my childhood room at my mom and dad’s house, but because of the lessons that we took and the people that we were able to meet and have touched our lives along the way,” he said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Moir praised Virtue’s elegance on the ice, calling it her “superpower.”
“When I look back, she could be the sexiest thing you’ve ever seen, but still classy, never vulgar. I think even when I say ‘the sexiest,’ I think that just cheapens it just a bit too much,” he said. “She just always had this class about her that, I think if it was just me out there doing Moulin Rouge, it probably would have crossed the line.”

Moir and his wife Jackie are parents to a young daughter, Emma, and a son named Georgie, while Virtue is a mom to 1½-year-old son McCormick with her fiancé, Toronto Maple Leafs player Morgan Rielly.
Back in the peak of their Olympics mania, Virtue shut down dating speculation on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018, saying it’s a “big compliment” when people think she and Moir are together in real life.
“What we portray on the ice is really important to us,” she said. “We love getting into character, we love telling a story.”
Moir is currently at the 2026 Winter Olympics, coaching both Team USA's Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, and Team Canada's Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac.
