  • Layla Taylor shares she still faces “biphobic” comments since coming out earlier this year
  • The reality star hopes sharing her story publicly will inspire others who are scared to come out
  • Taylor says her two sons have met her girlfriend and are too young to grasp societal relationship norms

Layla Taylor says she still gets biphobic comments since she came out earlier this year.

Ahead of the release of season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Taylor explains in a conversation with PEOPLE that since coming out, she’s surprised to find that “people are still so homophobic.”

“I get a lot of biphobia from people saying that this is just a phase and I’m going to go right back to men, or all these weird assumptions,” she says. “But I just think after someone comes out, I feel like just let them figure it out for themselves, date who they want to date. And at the end of the day it’s no one’s business.”

The newest season of her reality show doesn’t show her experience navigating women (though she promises viewers will see that in later seasons), but she recently soft-launched her new girlfriend online, later seeming to confirm that she’s dating Colorado-based content creator and barber Kelsie Chesser. The influencer and model says she and her new girlfriend are “definitely easing into it” still, but she wanted to share her coming out online publicly.

“The only reason why I did formally address it is just to help youth that are feeling the same way, that are scared to come out — and even adults that are the same way, that are scared to come out — was just to share my story so I could help other people,” she says.

Her two sons have also already met her new girlfriend. Taylor says she introduces anyone she’s dating to her sons as her “friends first” — though she confesses, “they’re getting to the age now that they do understand.”

“I think luckily they’re so young right now that I don’t really feel like they even can conceptualize what ‘society’ a normal relationship looks like between a man and a woman. I don’t feel like they have an idea that it should be ‘man and woman,’ ” she says. “At some point, if they do come to me and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, we learned this at church with Dad,’ I’ll just say, ‘Okay, well, Dad has his certain views. Other people can have their views. Mommy personally loves everyone and you can too one day if you want to; that’s up to you.’ ”

Season 5 of Mormon Wives sees Taylor’s breakup with Mason McWhorter — the brother of Miranda Hope‘s ex-husband, Chase McWhorter. Following that split, she says she’s approaching this new relationship “a lot slower and taking it at my pace that I feel safe with.”

“I was so afraid of judgment from other people, but I think I wish I was more afraid of not being myself sooner,” Taylor admits. “I feel like life is short, and it would be a bummer if you’re not able to be fully who you are. And regardless, people are going to have comments about you even if you’re straight. So, just be who you want to be, love who you want to love, and if someone has an issue with it, that’s an internal thing that they need to figure out, because love is love and that’s all that matters.”

Season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is now streaming on Hulu.
