A high school senior in Alabama is fighting for his life while his family faces mounting financial insecurity.
Bryan Velasquez Mendoza, 18, is awaiting a kidney transplant, according to a GoFundMe established by his former teacher, Tanya Ford.
“He must travel for dialysis three times a week, and his mother is unable to work while caring for him,” Ford wrote on the fundraising page, adding that a string of setbacks and challenges have put increased pressure on Bryan and his family during this already devastating time.

“A few months ago, Bryan’s father was deported, leaving the family without his support. Shortly after, Bryan’s sister was involved in a car accident, further straining their resources,” she continued.

“Now, five family members are living together, struggling to cover basic needs like rent, groceries, utilities and transportation. They are also facing the possibility of needing to purchase another car to ensure Bryan can get to his treatments,” Ford added.
Despite everything he’s going through, Bryan — who Ford describes as “bright, determined, and very well liked” — is focused on completing the school year.
“He was an active member of the soccer team until his illness made it impossible for him to continue, but he remains committed to his education by completing his schoolwork through Dekalb Virtual Academy,” she explained.

Ford said that the money raised through the fundraiser “will go directly to Bryan and his family to help cover ongoing medical bills, travel expenses, living costs, car maintenance and other urgent needs.”
“Your support will make a real difference for Bryan and his family, helping them through this incredibly difficult time and giving Bryan hope for his future,” she added.
