A Kentucky mom is filled with gratitude following the arrival of her quadruplets. Megan Black previously suffered multiple pregnancy losses and was hospitalized for nearly 70 days before the babies’ birth in February.
“We had almost given up hope on growing our family any more,” Black, 40, tells PEOPLE of experiencing a pregnancy loss just two months before she conceived her quadruplets.
She and her husband, Erich Black, 46, share a 3-year-old daughter, Emyrson, and welcomed their four baby girls — Elly, Edyn, Dani and Lucy — at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati on Feb. 6.
“Now our home is full of five rainbow babies in total — and we couldn’t be luckier,” Megan says of the latest additions to their family.
Six years ago, the couple wed on New Year’s Eve. From the beginning, they hoped to have a “big family.” Erich, who is a full-time nursing student, was adopted as a baby and always dreamed of having his own family someday.
“He has always wanted to have biological relatives — someone who looks like him!” says Megan, a brand manager for a cat food company.
The journey to parenthood has been “tough,” she says. The Blacks struggled to get pregnant before and after Emyrson’s birth.

“Approaching my 40th birthday and on the heels of the miscarriage, we said we'd try one more month,” recalls Megan, “And if we weren’t successful, we would find our happiness as a family of three.”
When she and Erich learned about their latest pregnancy, they were thrilled and “nervous.” During an ultrasound appointment, the couple was shocked to learn that they were expecting not one baby, but four.
“We didn't think it could be possible. Trying to have just one baby was hard enough… How could there be four?” she says. The parents were cautioned by their doctor that there was a 40% chance that not all of the babies would survive.
About 70 days before the babies were born, Megan was admitted to the hospital. She had gone into preterm labor and required observation during the remainder of her high-risk pregnancy.
Following the birth of the preemies, Megan has been healing from the cesarean section and traveling back to the NICU every day.
“It is hard not to be able to hold your baby whenever you want or live a normal life soaking in newborn snuggles,” says Megan, who is able to hold her babies but is impeded by their wires and monitors. The transition has also been difficult on Emyrson, who is too young to enter the NICU.

Despite the challenges, the babies are “thriving” and meeting every milestone. Their parents don’t yet know when they’ll be able to come home, but await the day.
In the meantime, loved ones launched a GoFundMe for the couple to help cover baby necessities and medical care. The fundraiser has garnered nearly $25,000 as of Wednesday, March 11.
“Erich and Megan have always selflessly been there for others,” the organizer wrote. “Now it’s our turn to show up for them in this moment of both excitement and need.”
