Michelle Buteau has been married to Gijs van der Most since 2010, and now she’s sharing what keeps them going strong.
The actress and comedian, 48, opens up about her marriage with the Dutch photographer in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
“Communication is everything, and I over communicate, which is really good, especially being married to somebody whose English is their third language and they're a man. So, there’s no guessing,” she says.

The Survival of the Thickest star also finds it crucial to communicate when her work schedule is busy to avoid any potential conflicts.
“I set up in the day and knowing all the scenes that I'm in, I'm like, ‘I will probably be very quiet Wednesday to Friday.’ So it's not personal,” Buteau says. “When you set yourself up for success, I think you're setting everybody else up for success.”
The couple met in 2008 and tied the knot in 2010. Looking back on the early days in their relationship, she says, “I was running around this country doing comedy for like $500 here and there and everywhere, performing at colleges in 49 states in America. The only one left is Alaska.”
“He's been part of this hustle for so long, so my wins are his wins. This is a shared situation, which is amazing,” the actress continues.

Buteau says she has always loved her job but her hubby "always saw this bigger picture."
“He's like, ‘Oh man, you're a star.' He believed in me before I could even see what [my career] could really be. It’s really important to be with a partner who's not threatened by your gifts, but inspired by them,” she says.
The pair welcomed twins Hazel and Otis in September 2019 via a surrogate. Speaking about family life, Buteau says of her kids, “The milestone really is just watching them come into their own."
"They are in different classes now but when I pick them up from school, they just hug and love on each other. It's just so nice to see that they like each other. They love each other and they'll be taking care of each other for the rest of their lives,” she says.

PEOPLE previously shared an exclusive first look at the upcoming third and final season of Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest. Buteau co-created and stars in the series, and directed an episode in the third season.
“The first day of filming [season 3] felt like the final day. It was like the first and last day of summer camp because we knew. We were all like, ‘It can't stop here. We don't want it to stop here.’ And so every day felt like the first and the last day,” she said.
