Michael Connelly is back with an exciting new novel.
PEOPLE can share that the bestselling author will publish a new book this spring. Nightshade, Connelly’s first summer thriller since 2020, will be published in May via Little, Brown and Company.
The novel follows Los Angeles County detective Stillwell, who, after being taken off the homicide desk at his workplace, is adjusting to a new post on Catalina Island. While he’s fielding the usual calls of disorderly conduct and theft, Stilwell learns of a shocking development: a body has been found at the bottom of the island’s harbor.
Stillwell’s investigation will uncover the island’s secrets and lingering darkness, per the novel’s synopsis.
Connelly is the bestselling author of over 30 books of fiction and nonfiction, including the Lincoln Lawyer series. As Nightshade marks the writer’s return to summer thrillers, the author tells PEOPLE that crafting a new world and setting was a particularly fun challenge.

“I always get excited when I’m going out with a new character,” Connelly says. “This time I double down with a new locale as well. Catalina is LA-close, but it’s an island and that makes it all new.”
“It’s been a while since I’ve had a summer book and I think setting a story on a vacation island is a perfect fit,” he adds.
In addition to his page-turning novels, Connelly is a producer on numerous adaptations of his work, including the Netflix show Lincoln Lawyer, as well as the Prime Video series Boosh: Legacy and an untitled spin-off series.
