NEED TO KNOW

  • Mark Sanchez is expected to plead guilty after a violent altercation with a truck driver in Indianapolis in 2025
  • The former NFL quarterback was stabbed during the incident and later charged with multiple offenses, including felony battery, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication
  • Fox Sports announced that it would part ways with Sanchez one month after the incident

Mark Sanchez is expected to plead guilty to charges stemming from his role in a violent altercation in Indiana last year.

Sanchez’s legal team and state prosecutors filed a joint motion requesting a “guilty plea and sentencing hearing” on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Marion County ahead of a previously scheduled jury trial date of Sept. 8, ESPN and FOX59 reported.

The former Jets quarterback and TV personality, 39, made headlines after he was stabbed and later arrested following the alleged alleyway incident involving a 69-year-old truck driver, later identified as Perry Tole, in downtown Indianapolis on Oct. 4, 2025.

Nick Sanchez Jr., Sanchez’s legal advisor, tells PEOPLE in a statement that the plea deal is a “positive development” in the case.

“We are finalizing an agreement with the prosecutor’s office that provides a path toward resolving the state’s case. We’re also encouraged by the constructive conversations taking place regarding the related civil matter,” Sanchez Jr. says. “There is real momentum toward bringing this entire chapter to a close.”

After he was arrested at an Indianapolis hospital just hours following the altercation last October, Sanchez was initially charged on three misdemeanor counts: battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication. The battery charge was later upgraded to a felony.

The plea deal has yet to be officially accepted by a judge, and it is currently unclear which charges Sanchez will plead guilty to.

Matt Golitko, an attorney for Perry Tole, told PEOPLE that the truck driver’s legal team is “pleased with the constructive and professional conversations we’ve had with Mr. Sanchez’s team.”

“Our discussions have been productive and we’re on a positive path toward an agreement that will allow the parties to move forward,” Golitko shares. “Mr. Tole appreciates the progress we have achieved and looks forward to an amicable resolution.”

The allegedly drunken altercation that sparked the criminal charges against Sanchez first began outside a Westin hotel in Indianapolis shortly after midnight local time on Oct. 4, 2025.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were unable to determine who the victim was when they first arrived on the scene and found Sanchez suffering from “several stab wounds to his upper right torso area,” according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case and previously obtained by PEOPLE.

He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but Det. Joshua Stayton wrote in the affidavit that when questioned by an assault detective, Sanchez said: “he did not know who did this or how it happened.”

Detectives then spoke to Tole, who had been taken to a separate hospital with a “laceration to his left cheek,” according to the affidavit. The truck driver alleged that he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense.

The stabbing occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m., after Sanchez approached the door of a box truck and began talking to the driver in an alley between the Westin and Marriott hotels, police said in the affidavit, citing surveillance footage.

The video showed Tole walking backwards away from the former quarterback, who followed him. Sanchez was then allegedly seen running after Tole before grabbing and throwing him toward a wall.

Tole also told authorities that the altercation began because Sanchez told him a hotel manager had barred him from standing in the loading dock, TMZ reported of the incident at the time. He also said that he smelled alcohol on Sanchez, whom he alleged was slurring his words.

In the documents, the truck driver said that he thought the former quarterback was “trying to kill [him]” and that he pepper-sprayed Sanchez, but that the commentator just wiped it away.

Tole then pulled out a knife and allegedly stabbed Sanchez three times before being knocked into a dumpster, according to the affidavit.

The driver said that all he could see was Sanchez’s feet coming at him as he lay on the ground, and Tole told detectives he felt like he was in a “life or death situation,” so he stood up and stabbed Sanchez one more time before he fled the scene.

Fox Sports announced that the network would part ways with Sanchez one month after the incident in Indianapolis, and replaced him with former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Chief Trial Deputy Ryan Mears of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said during a press conference several days after the incident that “this was a situation that did not need to occur.”

“I don’t care who you are. I don’t care what you do for a living. I don’t care where you live,” Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey added to reporters at the time. “If you come into our city, commit violence, we will use all the tools that are at our disposal to hold you accountable.”
