The McDonald’s manager who called 911 to report Luigi Mangione said the suspected shooter was recognized by his eyebrows.
Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on the streets of midtown Manhattan in December 2024, was arrested days after the shooting at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa.
Appearing at a pretrial hearing on Monday, Dec. 1 in a New York City courtroom, Mangione is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting of Thompson.
During the hearing, prosecutors played audio of the 911 call made by the manager who alerted police to Mangione.
The manager told a dispatcher that customers were coming up to her saying that a man in the restaurant was “suspicious” and resembled the suspect in Thompson’s killing.
“Customers walked up to me, and I say I can’t really do anything,” the manager said. “He’s wearing a black sweater jacket with a medical mask and a tan beanie, like a blue medical mask.”
She then told the dispatcher that Mangione was recognized by his distinctive eyebrows — though it’s unclear if she meant that she had recognized Mangione by that feature or if customers had.
Mangione is facing a total of nine charges at the state level, though the most serious of the nine — terrorism charges — were dropped.
Mangione is still facing terrorism charges at the federal level and faces the death penalty. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges he faces.

Thompson’s shocking murder preceded a multi-day manhunt, during which surveillance photos of a suspect were released by the New York City Police Department.
Surveillance footage showed a masked gunman brazenly shooting Thompson multiple times outside a midtown hotel before fleeing the area on a bike.
Mangione has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since he was extradited to New York after his arrest.
