One man had an extra-special surprise in store for his girlfriend when she crossed the marathon finish line.
On TikTok, user Sarah John, who goes by @sarahjohn69 on her account, shared a video of the moment she finishes the race, only to find her boyfriend waiting for her on one knee. Upon seeing her boyfriend, John puts her hands over her mouth, stunned. Before doing anything else, her boyfriend gestures for her to turn off the timer on her watch. Then, she makes her way over to him, and he takes her by the hand and asks her to marry him.
After popping the question, John immediately shakes her head “yes,” and the crowd begins cheering as her boyfriend places the ring on her finger before the couple shares a kiss.
“Started the marathon as a girlfriend, finished it as a fiancé ,” the runner captioned the original video of the moment, which amassed more than 2.9 million views when it posted in June 2024.
Recently, John shared the video again, and it went viral once more, capturing another 2 million views. However, in the comments, not everyone was supportive of her boyfriend’s choice to propose at that moment.
“Hmmm… should’ve let her have her moment to reflect and celebrate HER achievement. That proposal could’ve waited another day! ,” one user commented.
“I dunno, can’t he let her just have that moment?” another user wrote.
Someone else replied, “My girlfriend would genuinely just keep running past me. The cringe would be strong for her.”

But while some people disagreed with how the proposal went down, others thought the moment couldn’t have been more perfect, even suggesting cute ways the couple could honor John’s marathon finish time of 05:05:28 at the wedding — maybe even by using the numbers as their date.
One person even suggested John should also get a tattoo of the time.
“Tattoo to remember this is pending Would love to get married on that date but I am too impatient and excited to wait
Some running-related things will be incorporated into the wedding for sure
,” the runner responded to the comment.
“These comments are wild. If my partner did this I’d be over the moon, wouldn’t even cross my mind that he’d ‘stolen my moment.’ People need to lighten up. She clearly loved it, look how happy she is ,” someone else wrote.
“Exactly!! These strangers seem to think they know me better than my partner when in fact, anyone who knows me would know that this is the most perfect proposal for me
,” John responded.
