A man died on vacation, right as he and his fiancée were scheduled to travel back home.
Paulo Brockway got sick on Sept. 16 while he and his fiancée, Kerry Debono, were traveling in Cyprus, and he died the following day, Debono wrote on GoFundMe. He was 44.
“My fiancé and I went on holiday to celebrate our anniversary,” Debono, originally from Cardiff, said on the fundraising page. “I am devastated and will miss him terribly.”
“Paulo leaves behind a son who is devastated by the loss of his dad,” she continued, adding, “His loss has also affected so many people who loved him, including his mom, sisters and brother, who are completely heartbroken.”
Debono further explained that Brockway’s mother specifically “is struggling terribly to come to terms with losing her son.”

Debono told the BBC that doctors in Cyprus explained that Brockway suffered cardiac arrest following pancreatitis. She explained to the outlet that the condition had previously been undiagnosed.
Brockway did not have life insurance, per the GoFundMe page, but the couple had vacation insurance, the BBC reported. It paid for the hospital fees and returning Brockway’s body to Cardiff.

The GoFundMe page set up will help Debono and Brockway’s loved ones pay for his funeral.
“Any donation, no matter how small, would mean so much to us and would help us give Paulo the farewell he deserves,” Debono said.

Debono told the BBC of Brockway, “He had so much to live for, and he was just gone in the blink of an eye.”
“He was thriving. We had basically gone to celebrate our three-year anniversary. He said, ‘This is the place we need to get married,’ “ she added.
On the GoFundMe page, Debono spoke more about Brockway’s passions before his death, writing, “Over the last three years, Paulo had taken up mountain climbing, something he grew to absolutely love.”
“He climbed mountains for charity, raising money to help others, and the challenge of each climb gave him something to look forward to — always wanting to reach the next, bigger mountain,” she continued.
Added Debono of her late fiancé: “It was something he was incredibly passionate about and brought him so much happiness.”
